I Am On Electric Press | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

The publisher of Electric Press opens my article with a question: “An article about interior design in a literary magazine…are we crazy? No, we are not.
He continues: As Valentina explains in this article, the interior design of our homes and workspaces have an important bearing on our health and wellbeing and, ultimately this is reflected in our creativity”.

My article “Colours and Emotions” was published today and perhaps it came at the right time when the entire world is on a painful lockdown, sheltered in our homes. We can beat our seclusion by surrounding ourselves with colorful homes, colorful food, and scented plants. During this time, we all have less to do, it might be a good time to learn how to use mirrors to double the image of all pretty things in the home, how to use lights to create great atmospheres and see colors as our friendly aid to positivity.

Nothing beats seeing vibrant colors as soon as we open our eyes to a new day.
Of course, the chirping of birds, a kiss from the loved one, and the aroma of fresh brewing coffee are part of this corollary I call the good life, a natural consequence of a harmonious environment colored the way we like, because you see, before you slapped colors on your walls, or you selected colorful clothes, someone colored the world just the way it is with blue sky, yellow sun, green grass, brown trees, colorful flowers, blue waters, colorful fish, white mountains, and on and on, he was sure we were going to like it.

What is there to be afraid when using colors? If I can keep converting people to colors, I will keep on being happy.

A New Book Is On The Horizon | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

RED-A Voyage Into Colors

RED-A Voyage Into Colors

The second version of my book on the subject of colors: ©RED-A Voyage Into Colors (2019) will be republished and on the market very soon.

My previous publisher with whom I published the first version of this book in 2012 has asked me to raise his earning percentage on my sales to 50%. This is an absurd request, it would double the price of the book, making it unsellable. I refused to comply and as a result of it, the book was made “temporarily not available” on Amazon for many months.
I got discouraged for a while and tried to find a solution to return my book back on the market quickly, but books are not fritters and life gets in the way.

Today, with all the online opportunities, I thought it would be better to republish it on my own, as I have done already with a couple of books. I decided to divorce my previous publisher and place the ball in my court. I have worked on the second edition of ©RED-A Voyage Into Colors for a few months, added better information, better photographs, and eliminated what was not current anymore.

The first version was a hardcover, 135 pages, filled with my photographs. I thought of reducing the number of photos to lower the price, but then I remembered how hard it was to read a couple of books by other authors on the subject of colors and no photos to stop and ponder. It was hard to take. My new second version of this book will be softcover, smaller in size, with almost the same amount of pages and still filled with my photos. It will be available in paper format, and shortly after its publication will be available also as a Kindle and audio versions.

Right now, I am finishing up a few details, it is a matter of a few days and the new version will be out. Stay tuned.

Talking RED With Carra | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

This week, five years ago, I launched my third book: ©RED-A Voyage Into Colors. Many people interviewed me and cheered along with me.
Carra Riley was one of the kind and interesting people who interviewed me on Blog Talk Radio. Here is the link to the interview: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/carra-riley/2012/10/18/red-hot

Carra Riley is an author, realtor and one of the most creative people, full of ideas I have ever met. She never stops at one enterprise, she has two or three already started and taking shape at the same time. Carra is a high energy, passionate person and I love her just because of that. Passion is a rare quality that makes the world go around. She connects the dots around the world and dodges Cosmic Cow Pie with her book full of solutions and practical advices for an organized and balanced life. After her Cosmic books and products, she developed the Transition Living Real Estate Team through which she takes care of seasoned people transitioning in their third and fourth age.

Carra loves photography. Two of her photos were exhibited in a Russian Art Gallery during the Olympics in Russia 2014 featured in the “100 Wonders Of The World.” The exhibition was put together with the help of National Geographic, a unique way of re-examining the view of the world from the perspective of different societies and cultures, such as Russia, Germany, USA, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Kuwait, and even African countries.

Talking RED with Carra was fun and entertaining. She asked what the title of the book meant and I explained that my drawing on the front cover has many symbolisms. The heart represents all my passions tight by a leather belt to keep them from escaping. The three holes at the tops of the heart represent windows in my travels from which I have seen colors of other cultures, hence RED-A Voyage Into Colors. The red dot at the tip of the heart represents the heart itself kicking and shuffling all my colorful passions to make them happen and…. happen they did.

She went on asking about the meaning of the color RED in various aspects of life.
I introduced some concepts of RED used in marketing and sales, in decorating with Feng Shui theory, dos and don’ts of RED, how to polarize water, how to use it in our clothes and how to balance the red chakra.

Often one hour is never enough to talk about colors, but I was so grateful to Carra for this interview while I was launching the book. We exchanged our books, I was so happy to read her Cosmic Cow Pie, even happier about her book on CD I listened in the car during my long hours of driving.

Colors Matter | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Welcome to a Friday Fashion episode.

The question is always: black clothes or color clothes? The answer for me is always color clothes and I will never stop saying this, people wearing black, to my eyes, look as if they are mourning their life.

The youth of today prefers black as the uniform of the century and they wear it 24/7. The youth of today want to fit in the crowd and don’t much care to be original. The youth of today follows a current common to all and want to be approved by their peers who all wear the same style and the same colors, black, grey and beige.

Then, there is the crowd of adults who falls in the same category of the “army of people dressed in black” as I call them. They think black is elegant, easy to wear and slimming.
True, black is elegant, especially for evening events and glitz, in the day light it take energy away.
True, black is easy to wear, because it doesn’t need any thinking or artistic skills to match it with something else and more black items. It’s also easy to wear because it doesn’t show any dirt….
As far as slimming….. it will work if you believe it …. Black doesn’t receive or reflect light, thus a large person dressed in black looks like a dark large box. (Click on each photo to view it larger).

In my life, I never wanted to fit in. I dress in all colors, I put on what I like and looks good on me, regardless of fashion rules of the moment. I don’t paste myself with well-known signatures to feel important or rich. My everyday clothes are colorful, smart and stylish, enough to push two guys working in a grocery store to talk about my colors for an unusual long time, even disregarding the line building up behind me. One was a cashier, the other one helped bagging the grocery.

They were dressed in black, both had faces decorated with rings and tattoo covering arms and necks. They smiled and greeted me, I smiled back. They looked and kept looking, I smiled and kept smiling.
Then the cashier guy unexpectedly bursted in compliments. It seemed everything on me had caught their attention. They described my blue sunglasses (from Sorrento, Italy) like a blue sky on my face. They couldn’t believe such bright green apple pants combined with the night blue crocheted sweater was matching so well. It was almost like going through an x-ray machine, they scanned everything I had on and declared I was the best dressed woman passing in front of their eyes that day.
I thought I was only dressed casually for grocery, what would they say if they seen me really dressed for an occasion….

The conversation evolved from my colorful fashion to my colorful food and what I was going to cook with the items I bought. The guys were truly surprised that I had crocheted my sweater and I could cook as well.
Well, I will leave this last issue to a different post on Lost Art.

This only tells me one think: if these guys see an army of people dressed in black, gray and beige, day in and day out, what is there to be excited? The same would be in offices, in the street and any other place. Then, someone trots along with color energy, suddenly people smile, feel happy and inclined to start a friendly conversation. It means colors open people’s eyes wide and wake them up from the sedated colors they see every day.

Fashion should be fun and invigorating, it should give us confidence to express ourselves, it should make people smile and wanting to admire us.
Be a leader with a contagious personality. Ciao,
Valentina

Speaking On Stage Colorfully | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

I was on stage yesterday talking “colorfully” before a group of over 30 gentlewomen. I want to thank the Berkeley Italian Section Club for hosting my event. I enjoyed everyone of the participants and the tasty lunch.
The topic was: “Color Your World”.

Val Speaking ©Valentina Cirasola

©Valentina Cirasola

They all responded well to colors, in fact the audience came dressed in colorful clothes. It was surprisingly pleasant for me to see the wonderful expression of colors in their outfits, usually, I don’t get to see that many colors in an audience. I explained why colors inspire us and why we should wear them, throwing an arrow against certain colors I consider “boring” but useful nonetheless, in that all colors are beautiful and important in their functions.

Floral Colors

Tulip Tones
The focus of my talk was to explain why certain colors are not at all good to use alone. Beige, for instance, in the interior as well as in fashion, can act as a stabilizer when it is used with hot colors, like orange, red or yellow. Black can act as a grounding agent when a room is decorated in total white or beige and a total black outfit will come alive with small colored accents, such as a colorful pair of shoes.

Artichokes
Meadow

The eye needs to rest on some colors to feel relaxed. If a room is decorated in a monochromatic color there is no relief and the eye wanders around, therefore even though monochromatic schemes are beautiful in their character, always need some other colors as company. If wearing a total beige outfit, it is necessary to distract the eye of the viewers from the dullness of a total beige scheme.

Autumn Leaf
Succulents
Many women came up to me at the end of my conversation on colors to tell me how entertaining and informative my talk was. I never expect everybody to agree with me in these presentations. My knowledge comes from my long years of studies and most importantly from my 25 years of work experience in the design field. One woman talked to me about how good she feels in her total beige home with large windows through which she receives a ton of natural light and is able to see the nature outside. She feels relaxed and at ease with her neutrals, if she would color the walls she would feel overwhelmed ~ she said and I agree. If neutral tones are the preference, by all means, use neutrals. I just reminded her that nature has made all colors and perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad thing to add small accent colors in the accessories.

Morning Light

Neutral tones found in nature are beautiful and they are far from being all beige and dull, as you can see from  my photos. They are delicate, soothing, relaxing and lively. “Live in colors, change you life, change your energy”. Ciao,
