I Like Pink and Orange | Valentina Cirasola |Author

Colors to me have no season and I don’t associate holidays to certain colors, they are just colors and I enjoy their vibrations all year around. I can wear white in the winter or orange in August. What matter is the texture of the colors. A white cuddly wool coat and white woolly hat speak Winter, a silk orange shirt or a silk flowing skirt speak Spring and Summer.

Not everyone can wear bold colors and not everyone can wear soft colors.
I would get very tired wearing soft colors every day, I need a break from one or the other, thus I like to mix soft colors with bold colors to create a rhythm.

Here I am showing one pink light sweater combined with different orange items.

Our skin tone is a major indicator; it will tell which color looks the best and which color fights with it.

To be able to create a color palette that will always be in harmony with our skin, we need to choose colors that have the same temperature and value as our skin, hair and eyes.

I have a golden tone skin with warm temperature because I am tanned most of the year, my eyes are light blue changing to greenish-blue depending on the light and my hair is blondish. I can say my coloring is warm and I can choose colors from both the cool and warm hues families due to the light colors of my eyes and hair. Pink alone will clash with my skin and with my personality unless it is offset with a warm or darker color. I can wear pink accessories freely away from my face.

Warm colors are not off limit to a person with cool colors, just need to find the undertone of the warm colors and mix them with cool colors. Sounds difficult, but in reality it is not.

The spaces in our homes react the same ways when we use the right colors that match the color temperature and color value of our skin. If the wrong color bounces off the walls and reflects on our skin, we will certainly look and feel not at ease.

My book RED-A Voyage Into Colors, Second Edition is a pool of information about colors.

There is a lot to say about colors, when in doubt, ask the color experts. Ciao,

A New Book Is On The Horizon | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

RED-A Voyage Into Colors

RED-A Voyage Into Colors

The second version of my book on the subject of colors: ©RED-A Voyage Into Colors (2019) will be republished and on the market very soon.

My previous publisher with whom I published the first version of this book in 2012 has asked me to raise his earning percentage on my sales to 50%. This is an absurd request, it would double the price of the book, making it unsellable. I refused to comply and as a result of it, the book was made “temporarily not available” on Amazon for many months.
I got discouraged for a while and tried to find a solution to return my book back on the market quickly, but books are not fritters and life gets in the way.

Today, with all the online opportunities, I thought it would be better to republish it on my own, as I have done already with a couple of books. I decided to divorce my previous publisher and place the ball in my court. I have worked on the second edition of ©RED-A Voyage Into Colors for a few months, added better information, better photographs, and eliminated what was not current anymore.

The first version was a hardcover, 135 pages, filled with my photographs. I thought of reducing the number of photos to lower the price, but then I remembered how hard it was to read a couple of books by other authors on the subject of colors and no photos to stop and ponder. It was hard to take. My new second version of this book will be softcover, smaller in size, with almost the same amount of pages and still filled with my photos. It will be available in paper format, and shortly after its publication will be available also as a Kindle and audio versions.

Right now, I am finishing up a few details, it is a matter of a few days and the new version will be out. Stay tuned.

Orange Of Today | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

October in California is the best month, weather is mild warm and the breeze caresses softly. It is such a pleasure being seated outdoor at a restaurant and enjoy lunch with a chilled prosecco.

Today, I wanted to dress with a mix of intense Fall season colors to convey a certain strength and power nature has on me.
In a cool way, typical of my ability to mix colors, I composed my style with sulfur yellow tank, mustard yellow pants, brown leather belt,  mixed brown-gold silk scarf, orange light sweater jacket and mixed jewelry in orange-brown with gold.  A bit of leopard skin doesn’t hurt, especially if it is in the form of Kate Spade’s shoes. This combination is vibrant and very safe, colors are all warm and in the same family. That’s the reason they all work well together, especially if the wearer has a golden tone, olive or tanned skin.

(Click on each photo to view it larger).

Trying a combination with a cool color on the other side of the color wheel it’s not just good, it’s excellent. Orange, purple and a bit of turquoise is dynamic, zesty, eclectic and playful. As for jewelry, gold tones will go better with orange and silver will mix better with purple, it’s up to the wearer getting the sun energy from the gold or the moon energy from the silver.

Of course, many more colors love orange, as green and blue, but I will leave it to your imagination.

It is time to color your clothes, your closet, your home and everything else around. Leave the Opaque Couché color types to Mark Zuckerberg.

Colors play an important role in the vibe you give off to the rest of the world. It keep away depression, sadness and minor sicknesses. If you wear colors that make you feel good, your brain will know it, your heart will be lighter, positive energy will flow from your veins out of your skin and on your lips forming a big smile. A smile is contagious, people will notice it! Ciao,

Cognac Collection | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

The sophisticated appeal of cognac colors retain its allure in part because it is a classic timeless color, which adds quality and prestige to any interiors.
Blending cognac is an art and so is blending cognac color with other colors.

This coming fall we will see bronze, cognac and warm beige mixed with warm and cool colors.

The Warm Taupe of this Autumn suggests reassurance and stability. It is a trusted colors because it feels organic.
It is timeless and it pairs well with the top 10 shades studied for this Fall 2016 season.
I like to pair it with Cognac for an additional flavor. Yes, flavor, because colors are not only made to be seen, but we should feel them on our the skin and sometimes even be able to say:
“I just want to taste you”.

In my imagination swirling cognac in a brandy sniffer glass warmed up slowly over a small flame is a sensual act that brings out all the tones and shimmering light of yellow, orange, gold, topaz and hypnotizes the viewer.  Mixing various colors with Cognac to me has the same effect.
In my projects, I have done it always, even when these colors weren’t dictated by anyone. Their natural structure seems to bring happiness in my clients’ environment.

Fall In Love With Fall | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

This fall there is a new, fresh way to combine colors we have already seen before. Spicy Mustard with Airy Blue or Airy Blue with Bodacious (a type of magenta) are a very new pair. Blues are leading the pack of colors this coming fall mixed with warm heart tones. Dusty Cedar is a real welcomed revelation for its brilliancy and the capacity to mix well with all the fall colors planned for this year. Airy Blue has an intrinsic light, it is weightless and it means serenity. It pairs well with all the fall colors. Let’s see how I have combined it. (Click on each photo to view it larger).

If you are remaking a living room, for instance, here I have a couple of suggestions for you. My idea of a living room, provided that the size of the room allows it, is a playful space made up of various seating arrangements.

I have never liked the “large sofa” against the wall, two chairs on each side of the sofa, side tables and coffee table in front. I find this arrangement very boring.
My ideal living room is a space well designed for conversation or reading with various vignettes consisting of chairs for two or three people, a few tables between each seats or just one small table in the middle to serve everyone.

Airy Blue, Spicy Mustard, Shark Gray and Bodacious – Color Combination – Concept Two

(Furniture in my concept boards are from Grandinroad and Wayfair)

Besides central lighting in the ceiling, I like to add a source of light in each vignette, to create the rhythm of shadows and light. This type of arrangement facilitate conversations at a deeper level, allows to get to know a person closely, especially in parties, where nobody sits on the large sofa next to a person just met and everybody engage in meaningless small talks.

If you had a fireplace in a living room in needs of restyle, which main color or color combination would you choose? I am here to help. Ciao,

Your Fire Is An Element | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

We have the same fascination today with fireplaces as our ancestors did when central heating had not been invented yet and fireplaces were the only source of heat.  The difference is that today we are heavily submersed under city rules and regulations to save the earth and cannot use the fireplace as we would like.

In a few years, the sound of crackling fire and the smell of wood burning will be only a memory for those who have experienced it. I remember my grandmother’s large mouth fireplace where, as a girl, I stood inside just for fun, it was  used for heating,  to cook in, to dry clothes and when the fire wasn’t on, occasionally I played inside with my brothers. (Click on each photo to view it larger).

Before Fireplace(fireplace in the design phase)

At this time, I am dismantling a fireplace in a client’s home (photo above) and we must abide to the city regulations. We are looking at a very contemporary style electric wall mounted fireplace controlled with a remote device.

wall mounted fireplace
(Ikea Ideas For Small Living Room Living Room With Fireplace Modern Stone Fireplaces)

A lush meadow with tall trees surrounds the house, the exterior environment feels very mountainous and even a train that goes by every so often contributes to the romance of the view. For this, I want to evoke nature by adding in the interior décor some elements of leather, animal prints, weaved fabric, baskets, wines and wine décor. I want to create also an enveloping feeling with a good ambience light, which communicates with the vitality of fire in the wall.

Stone Cladding-Pebblestone

(Above: elitetile porcelana 12.2″ x 12.2″ porcelain field tile in pebblestone)

Triangles are the ideal symbolic shapes to create harmony with fire. I thought of treating the fireplace wall with stone cladding installed in triangles. These are pieces of veneer stones, pebbles or wood already set in a 12”x12” mesh easy to install. An alternative and less expensive solution would be to paint the new fireplace wall in a two-tone diamond shape or metallic faux finish.

Each of these treatments will turn the fireplace wall in the focal point of the room, thus a contrasting color and texture from the rest of the room are a must.

Metallic Wall Finish(Above wall finish from http://www.gspaintingpaloalto.com)

I see red somewhere in the new living room. Fire is red with all the warm colors of the spectrum: yellow, orange and even purple. Repeating the same red of the adjacent dining room either on the new fireplace wall or in one piece of furniture will make this living room socially happy.

I will need my client’s fire to complete the room and to play the game of textures with colors. Creativity craves passion and courage, this is what’s all about when creating a space. Ciao,

Velvet and Suede | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to a new Friday Fashion episode.
Be prepared to be draped in opulent velvet this coming fall 2016, but not the kind of velvet royals upholster their chairs or we find in aristocratic houses. Most designers went liberally over boards with velvet in their new collections, a new fluid material that will emphasize femininity and body shapes. In a modern way, it will still look luxurious due to the sheen and light of the fabric. What’s beautiful about the new velvet fabrics are the vibrant colors ranging from indigo blue to deep red, parakeet green to orange, saffron and blush hues, in addition to the new languid cuts and styles.
Keep your velvet sharp and ironed. If you don’t know how, let professionals iron it for you, they won’t crush the pile.

What kind of velvet garments can we wear this Fall 2016? Short tuxedo jacket-dress, jumpsuits, midi skirts, blazers to work and even evening gowns, but please don’t wear velvets from head to toes and don’t try to match velvet accessories to a velvet outfit.
A few more things to look for this Fall: plaid with a new twist and asymmetrical lines, colorful furs, eclectic styles are always in, bell sleeves, frills and ruffles, velvet or suede shoes. It’s all in the details.

MilitaryJacket-SuedeBoots

In my last trip to Europe I found a beautiful hand-embroidered floral Renaissance fabric. I knew exactly where to use it. My military jacket, plum color, now has a new soft look with that floral fabric. I will wear it with red suede boots. Ciao,

Bring Nature In: Bloom in Apricot Color | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

Welcome to a new episode of Bring Nature In. Twice a week for the next thirty days a will write about new décor solutions inspired by nature.

You would think growing an apricot tree is a very hard task, not at all, it’s the easiest thing in the world. Apricot trees resist moderate period of drought. The well-established trees only need to be watered in extreme conditions.

A few years ago for the entire season of the apricots, I ate organic apricots bought at a regular market, threw the pits in the same spot in my garden, water it regularly with the rest of plants and forgot it. Next spring the first apricot tree was born, then I tried it again and two more trees were born. Today, I don’t need to buy apricots at the store, they are abundant in my backyard, I eat them off the trees and make marmalade out of them. Pruning is necessary at the end of the apricot season to get an abundant production in the next year, especially must eliminate the damaged branches and those growing close together. (Click on each photo to view it larger).

MyApricots (Apricots grown in my garden from pits)

Apricots have antioxidant properties, thus considered a fountain of youth. If you have a tree, eat them fresh as they mature, and dry the rest to eat through the winter. The beta-carotene in the apricots prevents the degeneration of retina cells and the iron in them is suitable for treatment of anemia. The potassium in fresh and dried apricots prevents fluid retention in the body, helping people control their weight and hypertension. In between meals, fresh apricots suppress hunger and provide carbohydrates in the form of a good source of sugar.

Apricot blooms smell sweet, the small flowers are very delicate, transparent, almost paper like, the color is generally white-pinkish, with an occasional burst of dark pink and yellow pistil shoots. This is a perfect color palette for a bedroom.

Apricot Color Board
Let’s start with a dark wood or brown leather headboard to ground and disintegrate all the electromagnetism in the bedroom: TV, alarm clock, computer, iPhone and more and more, we like to bring all that stuff into bedroom. For warmth add a lush, rich color hardwood floor that will also absorb all the electricity around you.
Paint apricot orange the wall behind the bed headboard. That rich apricot color will soften the leather or wood headboard and will positively energized you when you get up in the morning. Paint the rest of the room in Off White. To add a touch of elegance, try pure silk sheets on the bed and will never return to anything else, promised. Mix a few lush apricot throw pillows mixed with red or dark pink pillows.

With a leather headboard and silk sheets, this representation looks very much a contemporary décor, thus I envision a white leather or white upholstered bench at the feet of the bed and a modern, sculpted white dresser. The left corner of a room is the wealth corner, Feng Shui theory says so. This is where you should finish the décor with hanging baubles holding cacti or air plant, or a plant that doesn’t require much care and water.

ApricotOrangeWhite
How you want to bloom every day is up to you, just remember that a touch of a bold color will change your day’s energy. Ciao,

Bring Nature In: Purple Wisdom | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

Legend says the name for the Iris flower came from a Greek Goddess who rode the rainbow. Love the legend and I love how this flower as delicate as it might look, it’s a hardy plant, perennial, easy to plant, easy to care for and very reliable. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, something you want to see roaming in your garden. Place the Iris in partly shaded area or morning sun area, never in a scorching full sun and they will grow luxuriant.
Among the 300 Iris species available Birded Iris is the easiest to grow, it blooms in late spring after tulips, daffodils, peonies and poppies. Bearded Iris likes to be divided every few years and from the rhizome (root bulb) after blooming is over, otherwise its blade-like leaves will not bloom into flowers much. Iris flowers come in a wide variety and hybrids. Water Iris likes to live near a pond or a water source, but doesn’t like to be planted directly in the water.

Water the Iris not so often especially if the ground is covered with mulch, bark chips or stone pebbles all moisture retaining materials. Feeding and fertilizing a perennial is just as easy. Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are the basic element of their food and in that order are represented on the bag with numbers, for ex. 5-10-10 or 5-10-5 or 10-10-10, thus choose a fertilizer with the middle number no lower than the other two. Basically you want the Phosphorus to be the highest number. Now that you have planted a beautiful patch of Iris, bring those colors in.

I have my patch of Iris across from kitchen door leading to the kitchen spice garden (all the spices I need for cooking). Inside, in my eating area, I have an attractive purple wall that at night creates beautiful atmospheres according to the type of lights I turn on. That’s right a dark color wall requires games of lights. (Click on each photo to view it larger).

PurpleCombo
My color board is self-explanatory, however to add a more natural environment in your home décor with this color palette and to soften the purple boldness, consider using a grasscloth wallpaper on three walls (see it in my board background) and one wall in purple, with the rest of the colors in this scheme used on furniture and accessories.

11

In your purple wisdom décor, add some purple amethyst stone to carry the energy of fire, passion, creativity and spirituality into your space wherever you will have this purple palette. Purple amethyst is a semi-precious stone highly esteemed for its legendary powers to stimulate and soothe mind-emotions. Purple amethyst is part of the Quartz family considered as precious as diamonds in ancient civilizations.

Another name for amethyst is “Gem of Fire” for all its passions and power to increase intelligence, even augmenting shrewdness in business matters. For this reason, purple is advisable in creative spaces and offices.

Like all the purple expressions, purple amethyst is associated with royals and religious people signifying dignity or higher status. This is a stone that protects against evil and connects to the Divine. Today we use it in meditation as a stone of spirituality to bring the mind to a quiet state and to purify a person’s aura of any negative energy. Ciao,

Bring Nature In: Rosy Palette |Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

Peony is the type of flower that will steal the scene with its luxurious blooms and velvety foliage. It is a type of herbaceous with a hard woody pencil like stem. It doesn’t grow more than 3-1/2 to 4 feet tall, it likes cooler climates and afternoon sun with plenty of water. It blooms in shades of lavender, pink, copper, yellow and cream. (Click on each photo to view it larger).

RosyPalette

Taking inspiration from my peony photograph, I thought its colors are perfect for a feminine interior. I see this rosy palette in a home office, a sitting room, or a girl bedroom.
Rosy colors activate brain frontal lobe activities, generally associated with reasoning, planning, decision-making and problem-solving, but rosy colors also affect the way you see yourself in a positive way. Rosy colors are calming, thus are perfect in rooms where thinking is required.

Bring your nature in and try some rosy colors in the décor. How does black enters this soft palette? Well, aside from being the natural background of my photo, that’s what my camera saw, black functions as grounding color and it can be introduced in a small amount, perhaps in the form of lampshades only.

Romazzino Crystal Collection
(Romazzino Crystal Collection)

I amuse myself with nature photography I take here and there, some are from my garden and some are not. Once a week, I will come up with a new color scheme based on my photographs of flowers and propose it for interiors. It will be a new series called Bring Nature In. If you need help in finding the right colors, I am here ready to help with my online services. Ciao,
