Quartz In The Sky | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

It would be nice if designers have new clients to propose new color trends every time Pantone comes out with new colors, but that’s not always the case and not always clients like the new trends.

Pantone_Color_of_the_Year_2016_shop_Pantone_Swatch_Cards

(Pantone 2016 – Rose Quartz – Serenity)

Rose Quartz and Serenity are the new colors for 2016. They look so retro and so much 1950s. The new colors are soothing, calming and bring peace in this time of so much turmoil. It’s a genderless palette that emphasizes the duality of today’s society.

However beautiful, soft and weightless they might be together, these two colors are not for everybody’s taste or skin. Some men will never live in a pink interior. It happened in one of my projects. The wife liked a lot of pink and peach on the wall, in the upholstery, in pictures and accessories, but her husband didn’t. They argued and discussed incessantly, I had to play a lot of my magic to quiet them down and bring the project to an end. I was able to add various shades of grey and earth tones to make most pink items disappear. In the kitchen he got his dark slate floor and beige cabinets with a lighter color contrast panels and she got her peach walls.

This year I have experimented with pastel color combinations in my clothes not in my interior and I am starting to like them. Knowing myself, it isn’t just enough to follow Pantone’s suggestions, my soft color combination will always have a splash of vibrant color. Let’s see how the rest of the world is treating Rose Quartz and Serenity colors.

I think quartz and serenity (light blue) color scheme looks good with white or natural distressed wood and exposed beams, any copper textured items with quartz color feels very natural.

If Rose Quartz and Serenity color combination is not for you, there are eight additional colors to choose from. Make it colorful and exciting.

Abstract Atmospheres | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

There is nothing abstract in my home designs, my clients’ interiors are real. A lot study goes into the choices of material, colors and shapes to adopt in each design.

Sometimes, I have visions as soon as I walk into a new client’s home of how I can improve or transform that home, my antennas capture the vibrations of people living there and guide me in the right directions.

I let the clients tell me what they want, what their desires or needs are. Their home to me is a clean canvas, a raw field to sow seeds all over that will sprout into beautiful flowers months later.
Designing is an abstract concept in the designer’s mind that people cannot see or visualize until it is drawn on paper and becomes a real entity. The hardest part of designing is dealing with people and different personalities and those are very real. A designer is a psychologist first, able to understand all the abstract ideas people have in mind, but that is another story.

After all is done, I take pictures in the most traditional way to show new prospects what I can do for them, but when I am alone, in the privacy of my studio, I have fun searching for those abstract elements of my design, something which will make people think and ask: What is it? So tell me, how do you interpret my images? (Click on each photo to view it larger).

Speaking On Stage Colorfully | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

I was on stage yesterday talking “colorfully” before a group of over 30 gentlewomen. I want to thank the Berkeley Italian Section Club for hosting my event. I enjoyed everyone of the participants and the tasty lunch.
The topic was: “Color Your World”.

Val Speaking ©Valentina Cirasola

©Valentina Cirasola

They all responded well to colors, in fact the audience came dressed in colorful clothes. It was surprisingly pleasant for me to see the wonderful expression of colors in their outfits, usually, I don’t get to see that many colors in an audience. I explained why colors inspire us and why we should wear them, throwing an arrow against certain colors I consider “boring” but useful nonetheless, in that all colors are beautiful and important in their functions.

Floral Colors

Tulip Tones
The focus of my talk was to explain why certain colors are not at all good to use alone. Beige, for instance, in the interior as well as in fashion, can act as a stabilizer when it is used with hot colors, like orange, red or yellow. Black can act as a grounding agent when a room is decorated in total white or beige and a total black outfit will come alive with small colored accents, such as a colorful pair of shoes.

Artichokes
Meadow

The eye needs to rest on some colors to feel relaxed. If a room is decorated in a monochromatic color there is no relief and the eye wanders around, therefore even though monochromatic schemes are beautiful in their character, always need some other colors as company. If wearing a total beige outfit, it is necessary to distract the eye of the viewers from the dullness of a total beige scheme.

Autumn Leaf
Succulents
Many women came up to me at the end of my conversation on colors to tell me how entertaining and informative my talk was. I never expect everybody to agree with me in these presentations. My knowledge comes from my long years of studies and most importantly from my 25 years of work experience in the design field. One woman talked to me about how good she feels in her total beige home with large windows through which she receives a ton of natural light and is able to see the nature outside. She feels relaxed and at ease with her neutrals, if she would color the walls she would feel overwhelmed ~ she said and I agree. If neutral tones are the preference, by all means, use neutrals. I just reminded her that nature has made all colors and perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad thing to add small accent colors in the accessories.

Morning Light

Neutral tones found in nature are beautiful and they are far from being all beige and dull, as you can see from  my photos. They are delicate, soothing, relaxing and lively. “Live in colors, change you life, change your energy”. Ciao,

Ditch The Black And Dress In Red | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to my Friday Fashion episode.
In less than 24 hours 2016 will be here and we will celebrate the new energy of the baby year. My suggestion for this end of the year is RED.
“Red is predominantly an action color since the beginning of time. It has been found in caves of primitive people as the main color to express a desire to hunt (…). Many primordial tribes and cultures have used red as the color for body paint to express beauty or admiration and have used it for their rituals. (…)
Red is a winning color for active people who like to lead (…)
Red has the power to increase enthusiasm, to stimulate energy, to increase blood pressure and heartbeat, to encourage action and confidence.
Red demands attention and will bring out the extrovert in you (…)”. This is an excerpt from my book ©RED-A Voyage Into Colors.

With all these attributes Red is the perfect color to welcome the New Year. If you are going to a formal party with dinner and dance I suggest a layered red dress short in the front and long in the back. Anything with high-low length  the rage this year.

For conservative women who want to look very chic without revealing much, one shoulder and a flowing dress is a good solution.

Kerr-One-Shoulder-Red-Aliexpress(Kerr, One Shoulder Red-Aliexpress)

For a less formal party wear a crisp, smart short red dress, close toes pump and a studded pave’ with pearl or glitz.

Vuhera(Vuhera.com)

GMCollection ImeldaSeashell
(GM Collection-Imelda Seashell Pave’)

I don’t believe in the perfect black dress, muffin tops and large body size will still be there. Black is slimming only for women who are already slim. If I go to a party and everybody is dressed in black, it feels more like a funeral than a party and I want to leave. Why not then stand out with originality and pick one of 5000 Pantone colors that look good on you?

However if you must wear black or beige, I suggest one of Nordstrom layered beaded fringe tops or an eyelet lace top. This year lace is allowed but no sexy transparencies.
In my country in Italy, we believe all women of all ages must wear a pair of red undies for good luck at New Year’s Eve. Go ahead, you have one more day to get that pair. Have a blast in red and a splendid 2016 all the way through. Ciao,

Christmas On The Sea | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

Every year I have a new challenge for beauty, style and originality: how to decorate my Christmas at home. Stores propose the same old thing, red, gold and green.
At times I see gold and silver with white. Rarely I see other colors. Christmas is a traditional holiday I like to respect the traditional celebrations, but being a non-traditional designer, I like to bring innovations in this yearly event and make it really special.

Driftwood_Christams_Tree
I was born on the beautiful blue-green water of the Adriatic Sea, the East side coast of Italy, I thought this year my Christmas will have a coastal flair with driftwood and succulent plants.
I want to create a very organic atmosphere that I might keep even after the holidays. With glass baubles I want to create light and reflections and that will be the shimmering I am looking for instead of using gold specks everywhere and fake ornaments.

I will use mini trees decorated with sea shells and ocean blue glass ornaments. I will scatter beach lights everywhere, fill vases with blue crystals and wrap gift packages with nautical maps.
The table will be dressed with bluish plates with a mixture of gold and blue drinking glasses.

The focus of my table is always food, wine and conversation with interesting people for which I reserve a large space. Decorations take a second place, inconspicuous and elegant in their simplicity. This year I want my decorations fresh looking with cool colors. I want to remember the aroma of the sea, imagining all the fresh seafood  just caught and brought alive to the table in wicker baskets, the fresh oysters, shellfish and the happy faces of my family, all fish eaters, around the bounty from the Adriatic Sea.
What are your Christmas decorations this year? Would you like to tell me about it?

While we wait for the new light to come into our life and celebrate it, I will wish all of you a very Happy Christmas and if you don’t celebrate it, please take some rest time and celebrate your life. Ciao,

Dolce Girls | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to my Friday Fashion.
Ah Italy in the 1950s !!! The II World War was beyond memory I was told, everything was new or being rebuilt, everything was flourishing and energy was high. Fashion was booming again and so was tourism.

Dolce & Gabbana immortalized most of the beautiful Italian cities’ icons and architectural details on dresses, pants and shirts of its collection Summer 2016. The collection is so “Dolce” and not only because it is an ode to Italy’s grandeur. Dolce & Gabbana has thought of something for every woman: A line skirts, flowing dresses, stripes, transparencies, short pants covered with long veils, hand embroiders, crochet flowers and incrustations made with mirrors, pom-pom, ribbons and fruit applied on most of the pieces.

The colors are vivid, bright and vibrant just like Italy is. Dolce & Gabbana’s followers don’t like black and I am so happy…., a ton of colored decorations adorn those few black items they produced.

I love the loose chignon adorned with fruit, or flowered headband. It’s a hairstyle that would look good on most girl and women.

The Summer 2016 collection celebrates the healthy lifestyle of Italy, the flavorful lemons of Amalfi from which we make limoncello, the fragrant flowers of the Italian Riviera, the striped awnings of fruttivendolo (fruit vendor store), Sicilian colors of the typical wedding carriage, the breathtaking panoramas of the lake districts and seaside coast line. The models took real selfies while walking on the runway, something that was never done before and just like the collection was very refreshing and spirited. Enjoy these 11 minutes of nothing by colors.
Well-done Dolce!!!!

Cloaked In Color Green | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

“Could green be the most important color on Earth? Plants and algae fuel the planet, and a lush, green pigment plays the starring role. This pigment captures the Sun’s rays, harnessing light’s energy to power life”~ says one of boards at the exhibit in the Museum of Science in San Francisco, California.

How do you feel about green in your home? Green is hope, is freshness, is relaxation, why wouldn’t you feel good in a green décor? Oh by the way, green is not only for bathrooms. Take a look at this concept board I prepared as a suggestion of a living room. (Click on the picture to view it in larger size).

Green Concept-A

I know I am not the traditional decorator, I don’t design my homes with a cookie cutter, that’s why in my décor it’s easy to find textured walls, stones or bricks, these elements always find their way in. The living room in my concept board has a brick wall opposite to a wall colored in Dried Herb color, Pantone 17-0627 (see photo with hanging lamps), then a load of green colors goes in the furniture, in the leather and upholstered chairs. Accent other items with opposite colors, such as tobacco leather chair and a stack of Marsala, gold pillows with a mixture of hand embroidered jute or natural fiber pillows to scatter around the room and on the floor.  To this setting, add artistic lighting that can be dimmed to suffuse lights and you will have a relaxing ambient.

Let’s move on to a green kitchen. I think an interesting backsplash lays in the pattern of the tiles. Don’t choose the usual straight subway, as everyone would do, but go with the wave or ogee pattern tile design, it will make an original backsplash.  – Wave Pattern below.

Wave Pattern

OgeePattern

Ogee Pattern

Green likes to play with the warm side of the color spectrum. This is how how I envision a kitchen with green backsplash: Marsala Red professional range (La Cornue in the photo), stainless steel all other appliances, reddish countertop, either a red marble or red granite with an open pattern. Stones are not fragile, that’s why they are called stones, they live under all kinds of weather and they will outlive you. Don’t be afraid of stones. A simple white wash, or a desert sage finish would be the color of the cabinets and for originality I would mix randomly the two cabinet colors.

Take a look at the next kitchen and how someone else has interpreted the green. This kitchen has a lot of natural light, don’t forget that green likes light.
I will have one green kitchen too coming up shortly.

In short green is not the color to hide in your own skin and blend into your habitat like a lizard. You are not supposed to camouflage in a green room and looking to be left alone. You can be cloaked in green to relax with your loved one and discuss life solutions. Give me a shout, if you are thinking of remodeling any part of your home. Ciao,

The Shape Is Round | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

The circle is a well-known convivial shape, it is the shape used when dining in groups and in most business meetings. The circle shape doesn’t have a start-end point, thus it represents unity and infinity. It is a protective sign, what’s in the circle stays in and what’s outside the circle will have difficulties coming in. The circle is the symbol of the sun, planet and stars and its influence is stellar.
In Chinese symbology, the circle represents heaven and the square represents earth. A square inside of a circle in Chinese art represents the union between heaven and earth. The yin yang symbol we all know so well is circular and it translates in duality with unified balance.

twist-dining-table-Molly
(Above photo: Scandinavian Designs)

The debate in my last dining room remodeling project was about a square or circle shaped dining table. For long years my clients got used to the square-shaped table. Their table style was outdated and didn’t fit the shape of the new room. Once I talked about these few points I mentioned above and a prospect to sit more friends to dine with them, they agreed the round table was the way to go.

This is a very nice couple well-established in their union and their way of life who have a studious approach to new ideas. The couple doesn’t make decisions on the spot or even in a short-term. The couple approaches new ideas as something that must be digested, pondered, discussed, studied in and out in all the angles until they both are overwhelmed and when finally can’t take it anymore involve me to finalize the decisions.

I opted to go with a circular glass table and circle back Molly chairs versus the more traditional dining chairs seen in every house I am invited to. BTW, at another project, I used the same Molly chairs with a glass square table for the same principle of the square inside the circle, representing heaven and earth. It went so well with that young couple, so different from one another and so unified.

I can’t show pictures yet, the dining room is still in the making and not totally finished. The kitchen leading into the dining room is completed and because it is more beautiful than they expected clients refuse to cook in it. They say the risk of making it dirty is high. Wasn’t the idea of remodeling the kitchen to have a better, comfortable space to cook in? I don’t understand. Now the kitchen is beautiful, clean and lonely, like getting dressed up and have no place to go. The result so far is very happy clients, but I am still waiting to get an invitation for a dinner they cooked with their hands.

Let me be your chosen designer who can put stardust in your décor. I can help you with any style. Put your name in the box, leave a comment and I will answer you within 24 hours. Ciao,

How Cool Do You Want To Be? | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

In the summer time, when my grandfather prepared to go out of the house, always chilled his clothes in the refrigerator for a few hours and then wore them to keep his body cool through the hot Italian weather. As a girl, I used to make fun of him, it seemed the most ridiculous thing to do until one day I could not take that same scorching heat myself and started to chill my clothes in the refrigerator too. This past august has been unusually hot for northern California. The heat rose up to 90+ F. most of the days, I was looking frantically to keep cool anywhere, even looking at pictures of refrigerators would cool me down.
I saw the picture of La Cambusa Refrigerator and immediately thought of my grandfather.

Cambusa Fridge (Meneghini-Cambusa Fridge)

Cambusa in English translates as the galley of merchant and military ships, depository of food provisions. Cambusa is basically a huge food pantry.
This refrigerator made by Italian manufacturer Meneghini follows the same concept with a few extra optional to the standard fridge and freezer components.
It includes space for coffee maker, fitted pantry, double pantry, ice-maker, microwave oven, steam oven and multi-function oven.
Considering all you get, price is really not bad: Euro 16,400 Vat included (European sales tax).

Meneghini kitchen Details

Mia Fridge(Mia Fridge)

It comes in a variety of colors and styles, but I think the red model is the most striking. The front face has nautical features: portholes, shutters and nautical handles.
You will instantly warm to these wood refrigerators. They can be customized, they are truly unique and individual as you are.

mini_kitchen(Mini Kitchen)

Meneghini makes other interesting appliances, such as the Mini Kitchen, with a sink on top and storage-refrigerator on the bottom. It might be perfect for a small apartment, or a bachelor pied-à-terre. Ciao,

It Is Not The Hawaiian Leis | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to my Friday Fashion episode.
In Chinatown I feel like a kid in a town fair. Colors, especially the color red and gold burst from pillar to post, pungent food smell comes out of every restaurant, some food do not appeal to my nose, but that’s OK, I don’t have to eat everything I see. Chinese people are very laborious, I can feel the hustle and bustle of Chinatown. Shops are full of tchotchke, trinkets and ornaments for tourists the same everywhere competing with one another. It is common to find food, fashion items and home cleaning utensils sharing the space in the same store. Once every ten shops, one might find a special shop with upscale merchandise, original fashion and attractive one of a kind items.

Chinatown2

In a jewelry shop, I found this coral necklace. It is double the length you see in the photo. I bought it out of impulse, the light of the store was so vivid that made every piece of jewelry bright and shiny, but when I brought it home I realized the colors did not suit my face and it looked too much like a Hawaiian flower leis, the kind of garland tourists receive as a sign of welcome or farewell. I had the idea to combine it with something else in a treasure chest. Vintage brooches and flowers pins fixed the look of this necklace to my liking. Now, I wear it wrapped around the neck twice and I attach the brooches or the flower as a pendant depending on the time of the day and the season.

Buying on impulse often is a waste of money if nothing else can be done to alter the piece to your liking and most certainly that piece will end up in the landfill, or in the closet contributing to the expansion of clutter. Knowing our body shape and the colors that complement our skin tone will reduce or totally stop the temptation of buying on impulse. In my case, since I collect many fashion items of interest, I can mix and match easily and I am able to turn things around to make them into something else. I keep my seamstress at work and happy.

Now, go to your wardrobe and pull out some items, clothes or jewelry you don’t like much. Can you change the look by pairing it with something else, or detract something from it? If you are in doubt and before discarding any piece call the expert stylist. I am always available for consultation in person and online. Ciao,
