Spring, Beauty and Books: Anne Goodwin

I am not the only one amazed at how a tiny seed can grow into a giant healthy plant. This year, I planted strawberries, and for the first time, the birds are not eating them. These little red juicy jewels hanging from a pot beautify my garden incredibly. I mix strawberries with a bit of sugar to make a natural facial exfoliating that refreshes and nourishes my skin. Of course, I eat my strawberries as well.
Author Anne Goodwin feels the same amazement with her Spring seeds.

Author Anne Goodwin

“I love to watch my garden emerge from hibernation, to awake to birdsong, to see butterflies and bees and find frogspawn in the pond. I’m always amazed how a tiny seed can grow into a plant that dwarfs me. It’s like the germ of an idea that becomes a story. But, like writing, gardening with nature does not always go to plan. Some seeds take root where I least expect them and, like weather and reader reactions, it’s not all within my control.
Yet it’s wonderfully therapeutic to bury my hands in the soil or the keyboard.  Such a thrill to harvest the fruits of my labours: the food on the table; the words on the printed page.  Or to lift my gaze from my desk to the window and catch the flowering cherry in bloom.”

Matilda Windsor Is Coming Home Blurb

In the dying days of the old asylums, three paths intersect.

Henry was only a boy when he waved goodbye to his glamorous grown-up sister; approaching sixty, his life is still on hold as he awaits her return.

As a high-society hostess renowned for her recitals, Matty’s burden weighs heavily upon her, but she bears it with fortitude and grace.

Janice, a young social worker, wants to set the world to rights, but she needs to tackle challenges closer to home.

A brother and sister separated by decades of deceit. Will truth prevail over bigotry, or will the buried secret keep family apart?

In this, her third novel, Anne Goodwin has drawn on the language and landscapes of her native Cumbria and on the culture of long-stay psychiatric hospitals where she began her clinical psychology career.

Spring, Beauty and Books: Colleen Chesebro

Spring in California is magnificent. On the same day, one can go to the beach and in an hour or two, one can reach the mountain to ski on fluffy snow. It sounds rather tiring, but a lot of wealthy people in this area live exactly like that. The weather is always very comfortable, not too warm, not too cold, it’s always Spring even in the winter. Heavy coats and heavy garments are not part of our wardrobe. I forgot what it is to live in cold weather. I look at my garden and feel like a parent watching the kids growing year after year. I see how it has grown from seeds, how time and my various moods have changed it and how much food it has produced for me. I feel so proud, a city girl like me has shaped a non-descriptive, anonymous yard into a beautiful garden.

Author Colleen Chesebro has a different Spring.
“Here in Michigan, it seems like we are in our third or fourth winter. Most days are sunny, but the biting wind makes it hard to enjoy the sunshine. Occasionally, southerly winds caress me with warmth, which is spring’s way of flirting—like a pretty girl who doesn’t realize her own beauty. Those warm days help me forget all the cold days.

Colleen M. Chesebro: Word Craft Poetry

Much of the snow has melted and last year’s spent leaves litter our front yard. I’ve spent some time thinking about what I will plant in front of our house this year. So far, I know I’ll plant flowering bushes (hydrangeas, come to mind) after the old maple tree stump is removed and I can enrich the soil.

After the maple tree—what will I plant out front?

Spring, inside the house, blooms in unexpected places. My Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter cactus blooms on a southerly facing windowsill.”

Spring sunshine brings blooms
pale blooms bask
in sun’s afterglow—
spring awaits

Spring, Beauty and Books : Sharon Marchisiello

Beautiful and fresh April, the beginning of a new nature’s bounty. April in Latin is translated in Aprilis, it derives from the words aperio, aperire, apertus, a verb meaning “to open”. In Roman time, April 1st was the beginning of the year, here we are my friends, Happy New Year to all and happy Spring.

I wanted to open this new Spring year with authors who can inspire us with thoughts of Spring, showing what they do to beautify their lives, and how they keep negativity away, suggestions that might be very important to keep our sanity at this time. Lately, I have not been much in touch with authors, I have been reading about politics and history in my language trying to learn this new global situation and be able to make my own decisions and conclusions versus what the media wants to push on me. This is my chance to get to know authors I am not familiar with.

The first to open the series is Sharon Marchisiello. She lives in Georgia, where spring has a very small window of pleasant temperatures before the weather starts getting hot and where she enjoys yellow-and-white daffodils, a redbud tree, and purple azaleas.

Sharon Marchisiello

“When I’m stuck on a scene, or just depressed about the latest news, taking a walk rejuvenates me. We live next to a cart path; our town maintains 75 miles of multi-use trails for walkers, cyclists, and golf carts. My route takes me past a lake where, if I’m lucky, I’ll see a great blue heron or a pair of Canada geese tending to their goslings. Then it winds through the forest where I’ll sometimes see does and their fawns foraging on new vegetation. Afterward, I love to sit outside on my patio, reading a book or sipping a glass of wine, inhaling the fresh scents of springtime, or maybe a neighbor’s barbeque. And when the sun sets over the golf course, bands of orange, pink, and purple steak the electric blue sky, reminding me that I’ve made it through another day”.

Camelia

About her latest book
My most recent novel, Secrets of the Galapagos (Sunbury Press, 2019) is set in an archipelago 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Located almost on the equator, the people and unique animals of the Galapagos enjoy perpetual spring.

Secrets Of The Galapagos – A novel by Sharon Marchisiello

Here’s a summary of the story:

“Shattered by a broken engagement and a business venture derailed by Jerome Haddad, her unscrupulous partner, Giovanna Rogers goes on a luxury Galapagos cruise with her grandmother to decompress. At least that’s what her grandmother thinks. Giovanna is determined to make Jerome pay for what he’s done, and she has a tip he’s headed for the Galapagos.

While snorkeling in Gardner Bay off the coast of Española Island, Giovanna and another cruise passenger, tortoise researcher Laurel Pardo, both become separated from the group, and Laurel is left behind. No one on the ship will acknowledge Laurel is missing, and Giovanna suspects a cover-up.

When the police come on board to investigate a death, Giovanna is sure the victim is Laurel. She’s anxious to give her testimony to the attractive local detective assigned to the case. Instead, she learns someone else is dead, and she’s a person of interest.

Resolved to keep searching for Laurel and make sense of her disappearance, Giovanna finds that several people on board the cruise ship have reasons to want Laurel gone. One is a scam involving Tio Armando, the famous Galapagos giant tortoise and a major tourist attraction in the archipelago. And Jerome Haddad has a hand in it. Thinking she’s the cat in this game, Giovanna gets too involved and becomes the mouse, putting her life in jeopardy. But if she doesn’t stop him, Jerome will go on to ruin others”.

I Like Pink and Orange | Valentina Cirasola |Author

Colors to me have no season and I don’t associate holidays to certain colors, they are just colors and I enjoy their vibrations all year around. I can wear white in the winter or orange in August. What matter is the texture of the colors. A white cuddly wool coat and white woolly hat speak Winter, a silk orange shirt or a silk flowing skirt speak Spring and Summer.

Not everyone can wear bold colors and not everyone can wear soft colors.
I would get very tired wearing soft colors every day, I need a break from one or the other, thus I like to mix soft colors with bold colors to create a rhythm.

Here I am showing one pink light sweater combined with different orange items.

Our skin tone is a major indicator; it will tell which color looks the best and which color fights with it.

To be able to create a color palette that will always be in harmony with our skin, we need to choose colors that have the same temperature and value as our skin, hair and eyes.

I have a golden tone skin with warm temperature because I am tanned most of the year, my eyes are light blue changing to greenish-blue depending on the light and my hair is blondish. I can say my coloring is warm and I can choose colors from both the cool and warm hues families due to the light colors of my eyes and hair. Pink alone will clash with my skin and with my personality unless it is offset with a warm or darker color. I can wear pink accessories freely away from my face.

Warm colors are not off limit to a person with cool colors, just need to find the undertone of the warm colors and mix them with cool colors. Sounds difficult, but in reality it is not.

The spaces in our homes react the same ways when we use the right colors that match the color temperature and color value of our skin. If the wrong color bounces off the walls and reflects on our skin, we will certainly look and feel not at ease.

My book RED-A Voyage Into Colors, Second Edition is a pool of information about colors.

There is a lot to say about colors, when in doubt, ask the color experts. Ciao,

I am featured on D.G. Kaye’s site today

I am honored to be featured on the D.G. Kaye, Writer, the Eclectic Memoirist and Conversationalist. Her Q&A today focuses on a bit of my life as a designer and an author.
Thank you, thank you, Debby, much appreciate it.

I find it not so easy to talk about myself, first I don’t know where to start, my parents made me an adult, possibly as soon as I was born, and although my life as a child was a happy one, I don’t have many childhood stories that have shaped me in the adulthood. I was born a practical person, knowing what I wanted and pursued it to the best of my abilities.
Without further ado, I leave you with the Q&A by D.G.Kaye, click on the link to read the full interview.

It’s my hope that through my writing and my stories I am enriching your aesthetic sensibility towards design, style, and inspiring you to live in beauty. I love to encourage my clients to show their personality through their home décor, or the clothes they wear. I have loved my profession as an interior-fashion designer since 1990. I am here ready to offer consultations on-line if you need it. Check out one of my books on the subject of colors, ©RED-A Voyage Into Colors, Second Edition. Amazon and Barnes&Noble

I Am On Electric Press | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

The publisher of Electric Press opens my article with a question: “An article about interior design in a literary magazine…are we crazy? No, we are not.
He continues: As Valentina explains in this article, the interior design of our homes and workspaces have an important bearing on our health and wellbeing and, ultimately this is reflected in our creativity”.

My article “Colours and Emotions” was published today and perhaps it came at the right time when the entire world is on a painful lockdown, sheltered in our homes. We can beat our seclusion by surrounding ourselves with colorful homes, colorful food, and scented plants. During this time, we all have less to do, it might be a good time to learn how to use mirrors to double the image of all pretty things in the home, how to use lights to create great atmospheres and see colors as our friendly aid to positivity.

Nothing beats seeing vibrant colors as soon as we open our eyes to a new day.
Of course, the chirping of birds, a kiss from the loved one, and the aroma of fresh brewing coffee are part of this corollary I call the good life, a natural consequence of a harmonious environment colored the way we like, because you see, before you slapped colors on your walls, or you selected colorful clothes, someone colored the world just the way it is with blue sky, yellow sun, green grass, brown trees, colorful flowers, blue waters, colorful fish, white mountains, and on and on, he was sure we were going to like it.

What is there to be afraid when using colors? If I can keep converting people to colors, I will keep on being happy.

A New Challenge | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

I love to be challenged, especially at the beginning of the year. Resolutions are useless, nobody keeps them passed January, challenges are almost an attach to self -discipline. I am in every time someone challenges me. This month, I am participating in Paul Taubman’s blog challenge, writing one blog a day for the entire month of January. http://www.facebook.com/groups/UltimateBlogChallenge

On January 1st, I never do any work, I refuse to get closer to anything resembling work. I am starting from day 2 of the blog challenge by telling about my work as a designer.  Often people think designers live in a gold bubble, have a golden life in a high stratosphere, and are fortunate people to discover where fantastic items, fabric, furniture, and rare clients are. Some of this is true only when a designer reaches a certain level of fame. Starting out is a hard climbing uphill for 90%  of the designers unless behind them there is an angel ready to shell out lots of money to subsidize the new profession.

Valentina on Job Site

Valentina on Construction Site

To produce something spectacular takes hard work and the behind of the scene moments are not that attractive. Designers often hang out in the industrial areas, dirty and unsafe places, where things are built. As an interior designer, I have dealt with fabrications of cabinets, wood, stone, iron, lighting, furniture in shops and warehouses located never in the richest and elegant areas of the city. One time, for only a second, I didn’t get caught in a crossfire of gangs shooting each other. The daughter of the iron fabricator got a bullet in her head and remained a paralyzed vegetable for life. She was at the time only 16 years old and I witnessed that very sad moment.

Designers must be psychologists dancing around clients’ troubles, quarrels, stress, and problems. They must know how to keep the peace and how to use the clients’ budget. We don’t want to talk about liability….of my!

If I was told all that I had to face in the real world at the end of my design studies at the university, I am not really sure I was going to stay in this design profession. However, knowing me and my love for design, I would have challenged everyone. In the meantime, thirty years have passed by and I carried on both professions, fashion, and interior design. Have I arrived? No, I have so much more to do, keep evolving in new future challenges.

If you want to see my evolutions, click on the video. TV producer Adek Hanukai, interviewed me this past summer on his show at KMVT15. The name of the show is simply “Valentina”.

What is your challenge this year? Wishing you a splendid 2020 all the way through. Ciao,
Valentina

Joy Ruffen0Oake

Joy Ruffen0Oake

Among many bad habits and the perception of a distorted reality the Internet has created, there is no doubt, it has made the world much smaller and connected us with people we would have never had the chance to meet. It was the case with Mrs. Joy Ruffen-Oake and myself. Joy is a fine fashion stylist, image consultant, and public speaker. I met her just by chance on Facebook. “Her passion and purpose is for women to feel incredible about themselves on the inside and to look equally amazing on the outside. She teaches how to acquire the look of elegance and sophistication, with ease. When her clients walk into a room, they command it by projecting confidence, integrity, and charisma, firmly standing in their power.” Joy is all about “Inspiring Passion, Potential, and Purpose!” I started to follow her on Facebook for the message she spread on colors, fashion, style, and some issues regarding women. I felt we were on the same wavelength and I had to contact her. She conducts online shows through Belive, I watch her any time possible. In fact, I was a guest on her show once. Joy is a skilled interviewer, watch us talking about fashion, colors, body shapes and much more. https://youtu.be/FXzIb-lWmYM

Joy participated in my book launch of ©RED- A Voyage Into Colors – Second Edition. As a sign of my gratitude, she is receiving a color reading for her zodiac sign. She is a Sagittarius, November 22 – December 21. People born under this sign, whose element is FIRE, are friendly, energetic, sincere, open, love colors, love adventures, travel and exploring. The ruling planet is Jupiter, the planet of fortune, one of the most colorful planets, which according to the winds and storms, picks up shades of white, red, orange, brown and yellow. However, the Sagittarius is dominated by purple, plum, dark/light blue and cream.

DarkWorkX:1638-Pixabay

DarkWorkX:1638-Pixabay

I wanted to create a color palette for Joy “the traveler”. Every time I see her in her show, she is wearing the right colors for her zodiac sign, my color reading for her would be pointless, I thought.
Instead, a concept colors for the entrance landing of her home might sound more extravagant. I imagine her house is tastefully decorated, and perhaps her entry landing does not need much, in that case, it would be just a good exercise for me. We never know….
She lives in Florida, where the weather is pretty toasty and bold colors do well.  If she has a traditional entrance wood door, I envision a purple Bougainvillea on one side and white oleander on the other side. If she does not have an elegant traditional door, then a painted door, yellow or light blue would be a good alternative and my choice of the two previous plants would still look good.  Then, I want to add her zodiac sign’s element, RED, in the forms of poppies and brown cones solar lights. On the opposite side of the fire element, her sign needs a water feature to reflect the sunlight. Potted birds of paradise plants that embody some of her bright zodiac colors will lead to the front door. Last, to complete the picture of her entrance landing, I would place near the door, a nice jardinière displaying turquoise and yellow stones, her lucky stones. I hope she likes it.

Spotlight: Debby Gies

Debby Gies

Debby Gies

The authors’ community is a great one, I found a lot of support and vivid communications. These are people who write, their words flow like the waters of a river. I discovered so many new books and have met so many fine writers, one of which is author Debby Gies Canadian born.

Debby is a non-fiction author/memoir writer who adopted the pen name of D.G.Kaye. She writes about her life experiences, matters of the heart, and women issues.
At the question of why I write, she says: “I love to write to tell stories that have lessons in them and hope to empowers others by sharing my own experiences. I write raw and honest, hoping that others can relate and find that we always have a choice to move from a negative space to a positive one. We need only the courage to take the leap.”

(Click on each photo to view it larger).

My six books

Debby Gies –  Six books

She describes herself as optimistic, funny, worry-wart. Of course, she was born under a Gemini sign, forever young at heart.
Visit her website: www.dgkayewriter.com
her social platforms Twitter , Facebook, Linkedin, and her award page.

She is participating in my new book launch and as a token of my gratitude, she is receiving color information regarding her zodiac sign: Gemini.

Gemini

zodiac-sign-DarkWorkX-Pixabay

Debby is a true Gemini – May 22 to June 21.  For her, I want to make up a living room in her colors. Gemini’s main color is Yellow. She lives in Toronto, I am sure she can use some yellow to brighten the grey, snowy days of Canada. There’s nothing better to cure the cold winter blues than the cheerful yellow.

Her lucky number is five and it is a protective number. it’s advisable to spread the color yellow in five ways, or in five rooms throughout her house by using yellow accessories, yellow curtains, yellow tone lights, yellow linens, yellow bath towel, and yellow flowers.

Yellow is the color of the naval chakra located in the stomach area, but our stomach is directly connected with the brain, with our intelligence and the power of setting goals. In fact, the stomach is called the “second brain”. Yellow is the color to use for manifesting something new, one wishes to happen. The yellow I want to use in her living room will be paired with bright blue, green and geometric patterns, perhaps I will accent the room with Pink, White, or Red.

My concept for her living room made of modern pieces, mixed with neo-classic and Victorian-style came out intentionally imperfect because I see Debby as a person who likes mutability and changes. I have seen her home style in a couple of photos, she appears to be a traditionalist, thus she might like a little stirring up in a different style.

Yellow Over Chestmut

Yellow Over Chestnut

I started with a reclaimed chestnut hardwood floor because bright brown is suiting to a Gemini character, it grounds the person born under this sign and it is a warm element for Canada weather. I see a modern velvet or ultra suede blue sofa with pink and yellow pillows. I envision a seating arrangement with yellow chairs of different styles. In my photo, I have included one neo-classic chair and one Victorian-style chair, however many different styles can be possible, as long as the pairing is done tastefully. The white color will balance the room, such as ceramic vases, in fact, the example vases I found can easily go from the aquarium to the hallway. White fresh flowers will balance the room as well, not just any white flowers, lily of the valley is the Gemini’s lucky flower. The variety of whimsical lamps will add a touch of originality to the room and a lot of character. Finish the room with many green plants with long foliage. I hope Debby will like it.
