Stories Of A Designer: Butler’s Pantry | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

My mind was wandering, thinking of a new design concept when an older project came back in my memory. I have been in my version of Downton Abbey for about six months, I recall saying.

The house was in construction when I was hired as the interior designer who would have added the beautiful touches to the architect’s work. Only the frame of the house was up and completed, no flooring, no sheetrock, and plumbing/electrical work were still exposed. The roof covered the bare walls. Looking around the bare house to get familiar with various rooms, I soon noticed this was a 6,000 square feet home, one could get lost in this house. It was beautifully laid–out, natural light pouring in every room and a lot of modern amenities were put in place like an intercom.

The couple was in the middle age, well to do and conservative in taste, but all the features that provided comfort, convenience and pleasure were very modern. Next to the living room, a billiard room had been planned. Across from the living room, there was a curvy staircase, which later when I dressed it up, became an attractive feature. It led up to the second floor, where an elegant studio and a library set on an open loggia overlooked downstairs into the great room. The upstairs floor plan struck me and the request was to make it into a living quarter, more than a sleeping quarter.

In the master bedroom, I had to plan an area for red wines and a refrigerator for champagne or white wines, a large fireplace and a food lift communicating with the kitchen downstairs to bring up the food in the bedroom at any time wanted, which the cook made in the kitchen. Two master baths for him and her, both with a steam shower, two walk-in closets for him and her, a large gym with T.V. and stock exchange electronic device. Music speakers everywhere filled the master bedroom spaces with their favorite music and an enormous amount of lighting illuminated the areas as if it was perennial daylight. Later, I learned about the habits of the inhabitants of this house and realized the couple lived mostly on the second floor.

The upstairs corridor hosted five bedrooms each with its own bath and an elevator for the convenience of the people using the upstairs spaces. Hmm, with that beautiful staircase I designed, I would have used the stairs every day to enjoy the beauty of the material and to use it as a daily exercise. Downstairs, among all the rooms beautifully laid out, there was a non-defined space between the kitchen and the formal dining room. That was the Butler’s Pantry. I mean a real Butler had been hired to take care of the affairs of the house.

The rest of the rooms, laundry with a full bath, wrapping packages room, large kitchen, family room, breakfast nook, guest room with a bath, billiard room, living room, great room, and a large foyer completed the downstairs. To put in place all the nice details in that house it took about six months and when we completed the construction phase, the décor started to emerge. The butler’s pantry started to take an incredible shape. The space did not contain food, there was a large pantry nearby the kitchen dedicated to food. The butler’s pantry was an elegant space for an elegant service. For a soft illumination, I placed a beautiful chandelier in the center of the ceiling and various sconces attached to the wood pilasters of the cabinetry. The only appliances needed in that space was a commercial type espresso maker, a microwave and a beautiful hammered copper sink with a natural stone counter.

The Mahogany cabinets were furniture, not kitchen cabinets. Glass doors illuminated from the inside showed in plain view all the riches of the house, a lot of illuminated rollout shelves for conveniently taking items from the back of the shelves, stunning architectural details and an elegant butler’s desk completed the décor.

The butler’s pantry separated the kitchen from the formal dining room for a reason. It’s not elegant to let the guests in the dining room hearing kitchen noises and smelling cooking odors. I wanted a rarity item in this special room that only a man in livery and white gloves was going to use: a butler’s ball, which I found at an antique store. It alerts the servants or the butler that the guests sitting at the dinner table need assistance without staring at them or standing behind their back.

Opening up boxes and filling up the cabinets with items serving the dining area, I delighted myself looking at with some refined tablecloths, fine wine glasses, some were even reproductions of Renaissance era, silver trays, ornate buckets and candle holders, interesting modern and antique dishes, and a plethora of table accessories, such as asparagus tongs, egg topper and a serious collection of teapots. I had never seen such items in an American home and I was very pleased. Modern Americans are mobile, they move often and when they move also sell part of their possessions. I really thought these objects were not just dust collectors and a way to keep the butler busy polishing. If they have them is because they use them.

The lifestyle of the inhabitants of the house was not like everybody else’s life, I know that, and this butler’s pantry was not an ordinary functional room off the kitchen where to store food, as most people would do. There was a house full of people working there, thus the butler was the manager of all and the Maître d’hôtel of entertainments. I never thought in these modern days I would have seen anything like this, but I did and I was part of the “downstairs and upstairs” lifestyle. I was part of the “Downton Abbey” type of play for about six months and I am dreaming every day to have a Mr.Carson around.
Even though I did not have permission to photograph the house for privacy reasons, I will cherish the good experience and the good memories of that house. Which is the exciting room in your home? Ciao,
Valentina

Swimming Pool or Lagoon? | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

At this time of the year, with the summer heat in full bloom, the only container I can think of is a pool in the garden containing a large body of cool, blue-green water where I can refresh my brain with a simple dip.

A “Swimming Pool” is a structure, basin, or tank which is intended for swimming, diving, or recreational bathing which contains water more than 24 inches deep at any point. This is roughly the description given in the book of building codes. Before December 14, 2006 building a swimming pool was fun and free of constrictions, until one-day things changed to complicate our lives.

Now every swimming pool installed, built or substantially modified after that date, must be equipped with one or more approved pool alarm which are capable of detecting a person entering the water at any point on the surface of the pool. The alarm must be audible at the poolside and other locations on the premises where the swimming pool is located, unless the swimming pool is equipped with an automatic power safety cover, then the alarm is not required.

A barrier of at least 4 feet high completely surrounding the swimming pool and obstructing access to the swimming pool is the next most important rule to know when building a swimming pool. Rules don’t stop here, we have been gifted with many more, but these are the two most important rules that will protect the homeowner if a group of strangers decides to jump the fence, take a dip in the pool while the homeowner is gone, act stupid and one of then drowns. Raising fences around the pool gives a sense of double seclusion more than the first fence built around the perimeter of the house and if you ask me is an unattractive feature. However, since the only thing we can do is to respect the rules, matter as well create something attractive and easy on the eye.

Just remember, if you are adding a swimming pool to increase value of your property, stop right there. The next buyers might not share your same interest in the pool and perhaps are looking to get a huge backyard for growing food instead. You never know. If you are building for your own pleasure, do it.

A few years ago I created a set of drawings for remodeling the exterior of my client’s home. The remodeling was mostly aimed to have an attractive swimming pool for entertainment right outside the kitchen. In my concept drawings there was just about everything the client wanted. My list might help someone reading me in this moment in building their own pool space.

1. Next-door neighbors was curious about the affairs of others and looked in my clients’ back yard to find his own amusement. Tall trees would block the curious neighbors and at night the in-ground lights would not make the trees a dark presence.
2. During the day a livable stoned terrace area would provide a secluded area for sunbathing, reading, relaxing. At night, warm LED light would highlight the terrace area creating a cozy ambient where friends would sit comfortably on cushions, converse and sip a cool drink while the illuminated pool would be the centerpiece.
3. I planned for solar panel to warm up the pool water when needed.
4. Marine sails over the lounge area offer a good amount of shade.
5. The space was large enough for plenty lounge chairs aligned all around the pool.
6. Planning an illuminated swimming pool complements the house and adds safety. I even planned an island of flowers protruding on the water and stairs to help kids get in the pool.
7. Of course I planned an attractive tall fence all the way around the pool.

This is what the client wanted and received. This project in the Tuscan style was developed on-line and I never got to see the finished project. I am always happy to follow the client’s desire and dreams, that is what a designer should do, but if I ought to make a swimming pool for myself I would opt for a lagoon, with large rocks, water fall, tall trees and illuminated lush vegetation, much like the photo of a lagoon I posted here, without being open to the sea.  Ah, let’s not forget the music! Good food, cool drinks and fun friends will follow. Ciao,
Valentina

Find some more fun door knob here https://www.trendhunter.com/slideshow/innovative-doorknobs

Emtek combines functionality, design, and fun all in one with its collection of Brighthandle, made of acrylic levers and stainless steel. Perfect for public restrooms and hotels, when the room is occupied the levers illuminates with LED lighting powered by a single AA battery. No need to put the Do Not Disturb sign against the door anymore. These levers are more expansive than the illuminated doorknobs, about $250 per door set.  It is fairly a new product and like all the new products, the price will come down with a larger market demand.

One small suggestion: if you have arthritis, problems with joints or difficulties in doing turning motion, it is best to use the wrist blade door handles and faucets levers. Ciao, Valentina

Something Up The Sleeve | Valentina Cirasola |Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aToday has been a day dedicated to the beaux-arts and creative arts. We are approaching the studio of an inventor of Interactive Fashion Art.  I was told it will astound us when we get to see what it is. The designer in person greets us at the door. His studio seems very industrial, but he doesn’t, he is fashionable and well polished. The door is sticking and the wind blows it open a few times. This going back a forth to close the door is giving me a little more time to observe his gestures. He is a smoker and very coquettish in his movements. After a brief introduction, I got him to talk about his invention, as matter of fact, he is wearing it. He is Gianfranco Nicastri.

His invention consists in a removable card 2” x 1″  of painted art taken from a canvas insert inside the wrist cuff of a shirt. Basically, a canvas has a few slits here and there where a 2” card is inserted. Both the card and underneath the card area are painted twice with the same details. When one card is removed the canvas area underneath is fully painted and doesn’t look bare naked. The painted card is then inserted into the opening of the shirt’s cuff fabricated with an open frame made just for this purpose. Only one wrist cuff of the shirt hosts a painted card. Women and men’s shirts carry this detail.

At first I thought the system is a bit fussy, taking the card out of the painting and putting in the shirt, then one must remember to take the card out of the shirt again before taking it to the dry cleaner. Will people remember to do all that in this busy life we live? Then I remember we are in the south of Italy, people here know how not to get stressed out. Like all the new things it takes time to digest it. However more I looked at it, more I liked it. It is different, snazzy and why not wearing a piece of real painted art?!  The shirts with the insertable cards sell on Gianfranco Nicastri’s site – www.nartist.it

Women purses with this technology apparently are being snapped up, he can’t produce them enough and jeans are still being perfected. Gianfranco has adopted the system of Interactive Fashion Art on upholstered chairs with arms and it looks so artsy. The insertable card is larger, almost as if the entire painting is done directly on the piece of furniture. Hopefully, we will see these inventions all over the world, as it seems they are already going. Traveling is the only thing you buy that makes you rich and we are learning so much on this trip.  Ciao,
Valentina

Room | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

This week the photo challenge is about the word ROOM – https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_photo_challenge/room

Rooms used to be grand and heavily decorated. Often we had to traverse many rooms before we could get to the right room, the destination for a specific activity, sleeping, eating, bathing, reading or gathering. In today’s world, rooms are built as small as possible to save on ground space, to fit more homes or apartments in one same borough.

Often people consider rooms as containers of stuff, without giving much thought to decorating. Once a room is filled with their possessions, it will serve their lives and that will be it.

(All photos belong to ©Valentina Interiors & Designs)

My ideal room must have plenty natural light from windows and skylights, if possible, must be spacious with a beautiful floor, must have some wall details such as niches and when I lay on the floor, I want to look up and see exposed beams, a mansard ceiling, or a stylish ceiling that will help me fantasize. After these architectural features important to me, the next thing I like is to have a balanced décor.

I like to open a door of a room and find a view on the opposite wall of the next room, a pleasant something to look at instead of staring a blank wall; a pleasant something that will accompany me when going from one room to the other; a pleasant something that will turn every wall in a gallery show. A room that overlooks another view is no longer a four-wall room. Ciao,

Slimming With Skinny Jeans | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWomen like skinny jeans, we look good and slim in them. I hope they will be here for a long time.
Can everyone wear them? With a bit of “savoir-faire” everyone can wear them.

Skinny jeans are perfect for the office. Choose a dark color that will give you crisp look, but nothing distressed that will give you a look of sloppiness. Choose jewel tones, blue dark green, or black to wear with a tailored blazer. If you have curves, especially around the hip, choose to wear a longer blazer, a trench coat, or an asymmetric sweater to cover the hip and make you look really sharp.

Good Length(Good Length)   –  (Photo: Polyvore)

Black skinny jeans are for any occasion, from morning shopping at leisure to the office, to a night out, or weekends. The skinny jeans have nothing really special, other than being slimming but the secret is in the hem, which should touch your ankle bone and not being bunched up in that area. Having the skinny jeans hemmed up properly will elongate the figure and then wearing the right shoes will give you that look of “casual finesse”.

Sloppy(Sloppy)  –  (Photos found on VanityFair.it)

Hide the parts of the body that are a bit strong and emphasize the beauty or the best parts. If the legs are plump and the derrière full get a larger size skinny jeans and wear them with a tunic, oversize shirt or a longer jacket. Color skinny jeans are also very fun. Old Navy Rockstar Jeans has many colors to choose from.

Absolutely Not(Absolutely Not)  –  (Photo found on http://imageresize.club)

However, the rule applies as always: bright colors on large hips will make them seem larger. Ciao,

Valentina

I Saw A Zebra At The Bar | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

How would you like to go to someone’s house and see a zebra comfortably standing at the bar having a happy beer in the game room?

I loved this image when I saw it at the art gallery I visited last weekend. I thought the zebra in cowboy clothes is an amusing creature and it would be an interesting décor for a boy’s room. To tell you the truth, I would like to have it as a mural on one of my walls in the kitchen.

Happy Hour

Not knowing if the artist Debbie Bakker at http://www.debbiebakker.com produces murals I was prompted to call her and found out. We had a nice conversation over the phone during which she told me a bit about herself and how she decided to become an illustrator.

Her latest achievement was to study art at the Academy of Arts in San Francisco, where she had to decide what kind of art field she wanted to land in. Being interested in children books, she decided to become an illustrator. One of her first illustrations was a dinosaur, which one of her sons wished to have when he was young. Pushed by her husband, her children and the beauty of her illustrations, Debbie decided to reproduce her dinosaurs on wall plates and t-shirts that now she sells on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/shop/DebbieBakkerArt  Pretty soon Debbie Bakker will produce posters and perhaps after my suggestions even murals.

5503842

Pen, ink and watercolors make her illustrations. http://www.debbiebakker.com/illustrations.html
Debbie’s illustrations struck me as kid’s rooms décor. Other than the usual cars, planes and boats for boys, flowers, butterflies and shoes for girls, there is not much on the market for kids’ rooms. I am always on the look out for new ideas and adventures, I am sure if I brought in one of these pictures, any kids would love it on the walls of their room.

Later, taking a better look of her illustrations, I thought there are plenty “young at heart” like me, who like to play with their décor, those people who like to have a house with character, without following any rules, a house not made with cookie cutters that doesn’t resemble everybody’s style. How about the man’s cave as it is called, a billiard room, or a music room illustrated with these life-size animals with human attitude? I can almost hear them gossiping about us humans.

Let me be your chosen designer who can put star-dust in your décor. I can help you with any style. Your comment is appreciated and I will answer you within 24 hours. Ciao,

Home Designs Master Has A New Home | Valentina Cirasola | Author and Designer

BalconeValenzanoWELCOME TO MY NEW HOME

Do you recognize the icon at the top? It was Home Designs Master’s old home by me Valentina Cirasola, Interior-Fashion Designer until mid-February 2014. I moved the design blog into a new site. Here you will find many items grouped together, such as my three books, my organized trips to Italy and more stuff. In the same site you can enjoy my three blog columns as well:
Home Designs Master, The Good Life, and Friday Fashion.

I asked WordPress Angels to help me migrate the blog from one site to the other. The process was seamless, but unfortunately, all the Likes and Comments I received in four years of blogging are lost, the WP Angels told me the comments wouldn’t line up with the blog they were written for.  It seems as for four years I wrote to the walls, it looks very lonely, but that’s the way it is, moving to a new home takes a few adjustments. All of you followers and readers have migrated too with the blogs, I am sure I will see your blogs coming in my email notification, but I do need your help in getting back all the Likes and Comments on any of my blogs as a real person and not a robot. The blog awards I received through the years are still there on a new page called Blog Awards Collection and I thank everybody gratefully for awarding my blogs so many times.

I am moving my design career to a new height and new experiences, thus I wanted my readers to find all my activities under one same roof. Looking forward to interacting with all of you again. In the meantime enjoy a well presented and inviting garden. The champagne is chilling in the bucket, just sit and enjoy a relaxing time. Ciao,

Helping Designing With Care And Love | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

The last three months of last year I was submerged with projects to develop online, projects I would have never considered when the work of an interior designer was only face-to-face and in the home of a client. Three years ago, I decided to add online consultations to my services, to help people with a tight budget.
(Click on each photo to view it larger).

Color Scheme1
Online projects are quick, often not complicated and do not engage me for six months to a year. People hire me for only a few hours of consultation via Skype and the rest is in their hands. Some people who have seen those projects I posted on social sites were kind to say “it’s nice and simple” another way to gently say “it’s too simple”. Yes, I hear you, projects online are simple because they are for people who want professional opinions and ideas, but want to challenge themselves to do it. However, as much as projects can be simple, they require the same efforts from me to produce something aesthetically pleasing and affordable. It would be a waist of my efforts to give someone something they can’t afford.

Color Scheme2

Aside from the simple projects that come almost every week, my online consultations have helped far away customers with large remodeling projects. In fact I designed a kitchen in England, a living room, studio and entry in a house in France, a kitchen and conservatory in Florida and a few others around the country without moving an inch from my desk, all via Skype. New floor plans drawn up and spaces redesigned by me the professional was the object of all these projects, hiring the labor to execute my designs, supervision and resolving problems that might arise during construction was left to the client.

In online consultations, due to lack of personal contact, there is no touching, hand shake, sharing a cup of coffee together, or taking a client to lunch, people only talk to me through a computer screen and it becomes almost impossible to cultivate a client. To avoid having impersonal conversation it is important to listen well, to be compassionate, make them feel loved, show the same care as for large projects and sell only what they want and give them only what they need.

My services have the same value, fees are not discounted and my knowledge doesn’t change because I consult online. The savings is in getting a few hours of my expertise, versus hiring me from concept to completion. Doing designs online has its downfall: often contractors take advantage of cutting corners if the designer is not on board checking on every little details, therefore if my design concepts have changed and at the end the project doesn’t look the same, I will not publish it.

Color Scheme3

Here I am showing one online project for a college woman in her 20s, who gravitated my design decisions around a large brown leather sofa she owned before she met me. The scheme #3 is her final choice. I ordered a few club chairs to fill up her empty living room, seamstress sewed pillows and curtains, selected an Ikat rug, a few lights, a coffee table with seating and shipped everything to her.

I expected to see a more vibrant and upbeat taste in a young woman, this to me is very traditional, but this is exactly what she wanted. She is happy and that’s all it matters. Ciao,
Valentina

The Seven Wonders of The Blogosphere | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

Make someone happy today, it will make you happy too.
She called it “Award Encounter of the Seventh Kind” when Beverly Harvey received seven awards in one day from one of her blog followers. Beverly’s favorite subject is all about Cats. If you have a cat or you are thinking of getting one, you might want to follow Beverly to get her point of view, tips and suggestions on cats. http://moggiepurrs.wordpress.com/2014/01/09/award-encounters-of-the-seventh-kind/ Thank you Beverly for nominating me with seven awards.

It is a big surprise to receive blog awards from readers and followers we don’t even know except from their writing. I had my surprise too when Beverly awarded me with the same seven awards and that’s the reason I called this thank you page “The Seven Wonders of The Blogosphere”. What can I say? I feel very honored and humbly accept them all.

♥♥♥♥

The rules are as follows:
1. Display the award logo on your blog. 2. Link back to the person who nominated you. 3. State 7 things about yourself. 4. Nominate 15 (more or less) other bloggers for this award and link to them. 5. Notify those bloggers of the nomination and the award requirements. 6. Take the awards not yet given to you and enjoy them.

7 Things about me:
1. My favorite drinks are water as everyday liquid, coffee to burst my attention, champagne or prosecco (bubbles as I call them) to enjoy weekends.
2. I sleep very little, I have too much to do in this life.
3. I prefer foreign films, especially European.
4. Theatre plays and Opera are the two entertainments I gladly spend a bundle of money.
5. Cooking is not a chore for me, but my moments of enjoyment. I pour a glass or red wine, put on a classic music and start cooking. I do it everyday.
6. I am friendly and know a lot of people, but everybody is not my friend, only a few special people I choose are my friends.
7. I speak what’s on my mind, one of my biggest defects.

The nominees are:
http://theothersideofugly.com – Sherri addresses her audience as “Dear Humans”.
http://greendoorhospitality.wordpress.com – Kenley cooks like me.
