Today, In Brown And Black | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

The combination of black and brown has been one of my all-time favorite combinations. It is classy and smart, elegant and casual for all hours of the day. It gives out feelings of solidity and dependability, thus black and brown is perfect for business, daytime events, lunches and early afternoon cocktails, but brown alone it is not gratifying after five o’clock in the afternoon. Brown is not proper to look radiant at an evening affair. Under the nightlight brown becomes muddy, unless a lot of glitters incrust a brown outfit and black accessories, shoes, clutch, gloves and even some black-gold jewelry detail the outfit.

(Click on each photo to view it larger).

Brown it is also the color of the Earth and wood, thus we feel enveloped and secure in brown, adding black to it, becomes powerful and mature.
Certainly it is not a color combination for teenagers.

Pretend the color brown is chocolate and all of a sudden you feel sexy.

All the primary colors make brown: red, yellow and blue. Pairing brown with jewel tone colors is exquisite and playful. Today, as Autumn is approaching, I want to prepare the wardrobe with some brown and black, but that’s not all. I know brown will show all its beauty when is paired with sapphire, topaz, ruby, emerald, gold and silver, I just want to make sure I have plenty of these colors.

Today, we can wear brown shoes with a black outfit and vice versa, or even try the jewel tone accessories I just mentioned. Can you imagine a black and brown outfit, with blue sapphire suede shoes? I can.

In my photos, the brown and black outfit is the same, but it changes the feel just by changing the scarf and the shoes.
As you see it is that easy. Please feel encouraged to use colors the way no other will do, it is energizing. Ciao,
Valentina

Shirts Collection | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to my Friday Fashion episode.

I stand in front of my clothes and have no problem deciding what to wear. Everything is color coordinated and everything fits my body and the occasion.
My degree in fashion and merchandising I acquired in my twenties completely changed my life and changed the way I see clothes. I curate my clothes as I curate my clients’ homes when I design for them.

Every September and October I assess my clothes and shoes. I give away the pieces I don’t like, those items I wore to pieces, outdated clothes or clothes that don’t fit anymore. I send the rest to cleaning or restoration.
(Click on each photo to view it larger).

shirtscollection

I shop for my clothes and accessories in peculiar places, holes in the walls sort of speak and curiosity shops, it has been my quirk since a young age. Sometimes I can find an interesting piece in the strangest places, such as ceramic shop, or a vintage shop as it happened with this blue shirt below with beautiful double lacy sleeves, which cover the hands. It was a display in a French furniture and accessories shop, propped on a mannequin and not for sale. I pestered the shop owner, it wasn’t easy, but I got it.

blueshirt

People in foreign countries wear different things and different colors. Travelling encourages me to learn about other cultures and study what they wear. Often I bring back home a local piece of fashion of the place I visited, never seen where I live, but only if I can mix and match it with my collection. I don’t buy just to get a souvenir and leave it in my closet, I buy only if it will go with everything I have. Needless to say, I have a photographic memory of the clothes I own.

Most of my shirts have long sleeves, which I use all year, summer and winter. Some of them can be worn with jeans or leggings in the morning and a night with a fancier skirt become a more elegant attire for theatre performance.
In the summer time I roll up the sleeves for a casual look and in the winter I wear them with long sweater or cardigans. I also buy timeless items and no one will have say a shirt is 1986 or 2016. I buy clothes good for my texture and colors and that is it.
Keeping a collection of shirts or in general good clothes is a work of dedication to ourselves. It is our responsibility to keep the body in shape and be able to fit in our collection for several years.

I want a versatile wardrobe that speaks my personality and will functions in many situations. This is the sort of things I teach in my seminars. My next seminar is Nov.13, 2016. Find your ticket here: https://goo.gl/1I30OE
What about you? How versatile is your wardrobe? Ciao,
Valentina

A Spectacle Of A Wedding | Valentina Cirasola |Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aThe phone rings just like it rings every day, but this was a very special call from the past. A warm female voice calls my name and I have no idea who I am talking to. She is enigmatic and I am intrigued, she knows details of me and I have no clue who she is. Then one name, one place, and the picture is clear. She is Franny, a girl born in an Italian family living in the East Coast, now a mother of three kids. She was in her early twenties when I met her and designed her wedding dress when that time arrived.

Bride

From designing only a dress, we ended up creating the entire wedding color scheme and style together. Her colors were black and white, she chose a very stylized and modern décor. The dining area of the hotel she engaged for the celebrations was stunning! White tablecloth, black linen napkins, black water glasses, and crystal all the others, black handles tableware with silver metal parts. Black chairs and white seats, white flowers of a different kind had one black rose in the middle of the arrangement. Bride’s maids were dressed in black with white corsage and silver jewelry, white hats and black sandals with rhinestone.
My dress emulated a butterfly, of course, I designed it and was black and white as well. I am in the photo with the couple and the Italian seamstress. I tell you the entire setting was stunning!

Matrimonio

Pictures? I wished my pictures of that fantastic event were still with me. I was young and never thought I needed an archive of pictures when I was conquering the world. These are the only photos I have left of that day.

I am still designing fashion without the pressure I had then. Now I take care of high-profile, professional clients’ personal image, their colors and their wardrobe recreated completely new when needed. Ciao,

The Energy Of Your Home | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

For some reason an episode that happened in my career a few years ago came to my mind yesterday while I was talking in my monthly radio show. I started to talk about how I helped a client in many aspects of his life just by changing colors. The memory was sweet.

Mark (a given name to disguise his identity), a very nice chap, professional, single and always dressed in black needed a facelift in some parts of his home. He was a neat guy, everything was in its right place, but the energy of the house was not right. In one of our thinking moments, you know, coffee, ideas and notes, he confided that something was missing in his life: a steady woman. I don’t discuss private issues with clients, not unless they start first and if they do, I am always ready to listen, it makes my business a little more human.

He confided to be ready for a long-lasting relationship and perhaps marriage. During our conversations, my eyes shifted often on the pictures on the walls, all representing women with their back to the viewers. What is wrong with this? Nothing at all, especially when the paintings are famous and you are not looking for the real woman to settle down with. In the case of my client, the women in his paintings showed their beautiful backs, but the faces were totally hidden, there was no eye connection between him and the women. It was as if they refused his energy to be part of their life, in a figurative way.

I asked him if he was emotionally attached to those paintings and if he was opposed to change them. I suggested shifting the energy by temporarily hanging some pictures of happy looking women smiling, showing their lips, theirs eyes and the full figures in plain front view, perhaps colorful vintage pin-up girls that would bring cheerfulness in his home. We did that and put away the beautiful women’s backs at least for the time being. Looking at new smiling pin-up women everyday was like calling them into his life.

I like the “Call me Peroni, I will be your beer.” It’s very suggestive!

Then we proceeded to change the flow of the home, rearranged furniture, substituted old tired pieces with new ones, added some fresh accessories, new wall colors and real plants that didn’t need much care. The magic happened in his wardrobe. He didn’t know I could create personal images too, or that it is part of my services. For Mark a black shirt was easy to match with a black pants and black shoes, thus easy to get dressed in the morning.

Black is the color that blocks the light and the positive or negative energy from other people. He had the answer to his problems when he heard me speaking these words. In fact he recalled episodes at his work of people being not too friendly with him and keeping away from him. Often he was not invited to social functions because people thought he was single and too busy with different women, in reality the black of his clothes prevented people to get closer to him. In a way the color black made him look too sophisticated or in the eyes of some he was “callus” and not approachable.

The obvious solution to me was to give some colors to his wardrobe and as soon as he started to come out with striped shirts, some prints, elegant solid colors with funky ties and different colors shoes to match with different color pants, his face picked up a new light, a king of positive aura and a new energy. He looked healthier and happier, people started to get closer to him because the changes opened up a friendly path, people felt invited and so did the woman of his life. Six months after this major change, the right woman appeared and they got married. That was his goal and my goal was to create a positive energy in the house and around his image.

Many people treat a home just like an investment without caring much of the content and cleanliness. Often I go into dirty and untidy homes, where I could write the story of my life on the dust of their furniture and where I can smell the fish or the bacon cooked many days before. A home has a soul and not just your soul, the walls and the upholstery breathe all the smells of the house, from perfume to fried food. Dirty windows will block the positive energy from coming in. Organized closets and drawers will help you simplify any chores. The colors of your home will depress you or make you happy, they are that powerful and the right lighting…..will illuminate you! Ciao,

Dress To Kill? Not Really | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aDress to kill? Not really. It’s my desire to get out of the house well put together even when I am wearing very casual clothes. If my soul is happy I am happy too, if my eyes are pleased I am pleased too and if my attire can strike a conversation and produce business, I will be even happier. Yesterday, I was dressed as I look in the picture.

I was browsing in a department store, looking for curiosities nothing in particular. At one moment a woman approached me asking for my opinion about some clothes she was thinking of buying. She said “I was well put together” and that was good enough for her to feel confident the opinion of a stranger was going to have a weight on her buying decision.

I explained to her from the point of view of a designer (but she didn’t know it at that moment) and with simple words why she should have bought one thing versus the other. Then someone else was listening and she got closer to really listen in. Then another woman got closer and more women arrived I don’t know from where. Pretty soon I had a small crowd asking my opinion on a variety of decisions and style for them. I should have asked the store to hire me as their fashion consultant!

The reason my outfit attracted people and their interest, was not just the inviting, summer yellow color of my hat.
There are rules for dressing up as there are rules for decorating homes. One can use them to the letter in a strict way, or as guidelines. The important thing is to know how to create balance, rhythm, and harmony. Those women even without knowing the fashion subject, sensed it I had it all together and felt naturally attracted by my energy.

In my outfit, I have all three elements. White is not a good color for my face, but it is needed in the summer to keep cool, thus to balance my figure I put it on the bottom part of my body. The white and dark blue stripes of my top create a rhythm because they go in three different directions; the ruched sides of this top are perfect to disguise and trick the eye just like the effect of Trompe-l’oeil designs in homes. The top had to be long enough to cover my bottom, as white tends to enlarge areas where nature has played very generously. My purse, sandals, and sunglasses are dark blue. However, without the element of surprise, that “vintage sunny yellow hat”, this ensemble would have been a common mise and it would not have sparked conversation in the store.

This is how I do it, I live my life with simple rules or common sense, as I like to refer to.

• Wearing a griffe on the clothes doesn’t make me feel more important. I know who I am and how I can help people, the griffe does absolutely nothing for me.
• Any common outfit can be dressed up with eccentric or interesting details.
• Personalize my mises as much as possible, not because I demand attention, my brain tells me it I am not interested in looking like everybody else.
• When using colors I keep it down to three and use only 10% of one of the three. In the outfit in the photo, my 10% is yellow.
• Wear colors that exalt my personality and make me feel good, regardless of fashion dictum.

Designing to me is building. In designing a personal image I build personal style; in designing a home I built harmony and in designing food or tables I build flavors. Voila’ I am here and prompt as ever to help. Consultations on-line are available. Ciao,
Valentina

Fashion Plays With Opposites This Fall | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Share

Girl-Pink-Green-1aItalians take fashion really serious in their everyday dressing and their everyday life. Home fashion is directly related to the catwalk fashion, the two fields live with each other in harmony. Even though we cannot change our home fashion every time a fashion collection is presented on the catwalk, we can at least take some guidance from it to renew our spaces.

The colors this years are dark wines with gold highlights, grey shades with brown, aubergine with silver tones, pinks with reds, bronze with copper and silver accents, silver and whites, animal prints with lines, floral with geometric. Most of the opposites are represented for both men and women. All of these combinations work well with traditional or contemporary styles, making our design work for both sexes a bit easier. Even the passamanterie as an accent can add a touch of class and personality in a modern décor and deconstruct a traditional décor with graphic lines can lighten and revive a tired home style.

I read about the collection of a few fashion designers for fall 2010. I love their ideas, their use of colors, patterns and the impact they will have on both fashion and home interiors. I love the game of opposites they want us to play. At times fashion takes a plain boring direction, but this fall, we have a lot to revise.

The new hues are daring and delicious, poetic with a touch of medieval beauty.
British designer Alexander McQueen revived the hand-loomed Jacquard with the impression of digital photography. McQueen left us his beautiful collection, representing his vision of Medieval Madonnas and Byzantine Empresses before he died in Feb.2010 at age 40. I absolutely adore his 2010 collection.
(Photo left: Alexander McQueen).

Designer, Andrew Gn, calls his fall collection a “modern rococo”, wanting to return to the 18th-century look with a touch of 21st century. He sees narrow jackets with stand up collars and row of front buttons. He revives the passamanterie trimming on velvet coats and bustier. The highlights of his collection are embroidered leather on the shoulder of coats, or neckline, oversize belt buckles with heavy incrustations and anything ruched, which hide all that women don’t want to show.

(Photo left-right: Andrew GN)

As you can see playing with opposites makes an interesting environment, one that speaks about character.

If your home is in the neutral tones the new bold colors of this fall 2010 are very chic and lively, add some pieces of dramatic furniture and bold accessories, voila’ you have a new home to come to. Perhaps the only thing to do for an upgraded look is to change throw pillows and window coverings, or the accessories all together, or repaint some walls in the metallic faux finish tones and not necessarily all in this order.

Homes do need to be refreshed every so often, your eyes and your soul will appreciate it. Allow colors into your life and allow your friends to enjoy it too, after all, beauty is made to share with others.

My design career started in fashion and for 15 years I was very happy in my fashion company before settling in the interior designing business. Now, with the long fashion experience and my 20 years in interior designing, I can guide my clients in the right choices for their beautiful homes.

I would love to help you or your friends and family transitioning into new color and the new you. Love to hear your comment. Ciao,
Valentina
