Trending This Week | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to a new episode of Friday Fashion.

We are in the middle of summer enjoying gardens, beaches, vacation, or backyard fun, but the fashion industries wants us to think of fall and winter. Collections for the next seasons are in stores already, ready for us. I have already seen Halloween and Christmas decorations. Living a year in advance is really awful and I want to linger on lightweight and breezy clothes, light colors, sandals and bikini for a little while longer.

I found a few curious things this week that will make the rest of the summer really fun.
Lipstick
(AliExpress.com)
I am crazy for crazy bags. The lipstick and the mushroom bags are great to start a conversation. They are not the usual bags, take them to a party and watch the effect on others.

Nicholas Kirkwood’s ‘Casati’ sandals have been crafted in Italy from rose gold patent-leather. Let’s not call them “slavery sandals” as Dolce & Gabbana did and offended the entire world. These are low heel T-bar sandals embellished with a row of gleaming faux pearls. $695. Another snip!

I choose low and high-priced items for every taste. I am sure out there plenty store carry similar items at a more affordable price. Let’s’ enjoy another month or two of summer before we can think of warmer clothes, rain, gray days and hibernating for the winter. Ciao,

I Rather Be The Good Wine In The Small Barrel | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to a new episode of Friday Fashion.

I know many women who are not as tall as they would like to be. The mirror test in the shopping hours is the moment of complain: “If I were a little taller I could wear this and that….” Well, we are what we are. We can alter our exterior look with colors, with the right shapes, or with plastic surgery, but we cannot alter the height, matter as well accept our body without hesitation, regret or envy and make the best of it.

There are tricks to adopt to make us appear taller, as there are tricks to make bags under the eye disappear or make teeth whiter. It is easy when it comes to fashion to lapse into the ridiculous. Ridiculous for me are violent prints and overlapping fashion in elements which lead to great confusion; excess of vulgarity, inconsistencies of certain combinations; wearing shoes that makes the ankle coarse or a skirt that cannot be wore due to physical conformation.

High Waist Saylor Style(Photo: DressLily)

To rejuvenate is very important, it will affect soul and spirit. Anyone wants to feel younger in a younger style and lines, however to rejuvenate with an aggressive look is not a winning move. Who cares what everybody wears, be different from others, find your personal style and learn not to blend in. With the right proportions, the right outfit, and the right colors, the goal is to feel good in the interior and exterior with what nature has gifted us.

I am a short person too. I should have suffered the missing inches as most of my friends are taller, but I didn’t,  I have learned to hide my small defects and to exalt my virtues.

(Below photo unknown – Credit given to the author or maker).

Wedge and Plateau

To look taller follow these basic rules and go on with life:

  1. Avoid long skirts with a lot of fabric flapping between the legs. If you must wear something long wear a pencil long skirt or dress. However short skirts on a short person are a better choice.
  2. Avoid bell bottom pants and low-cut waist pants or shirt. Pencil bottom pants are better and high waist pants and skirts are also a better choice.
  3. Avoid long oversize jackets. It will swallow a short person.
  4. Avoid a ton of print, use vertical stripes or monochrome color scheme.
  5. Avoid hats with large brims and large bags.
  6. Avoid flat shoes and high heel above 5” including wedges, but never give up the right heels. In addition to the height, a short woman in high heels will gain a more feminine sexier walking style.
  7. Whenever possible wear shoes of the same color of the pants. It will help elongate the figure at least visually.
  8. Avoid long hair unless they are collected and tied above. A short dynamic cut is better for a short woman.
  9. Avoid long nails.

Dynamite comes in small packages and I rather be the good wine in the small barrels.

I am here to help if you need to rejuvenate your look. Ciao,
Valentina

Wear A Hat Like A Duchess | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to my Friday Fashion
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge looks always impeccable with her hats. With the bevy of fashion advisers buzzing around her, why wouldn’t she be perfect?

What we see in the street it’s another story, not everyone is a duchess and not everybody has a face made for a hat. Out there we see a confused mixture of things and fashion faux pas. People wear everything in the latest fashion regardless of rules. To me the choice always lays only on what looks good on me.

Wearing a hat is not as easy as buying one and propping it on the head. One must understand the proportion
between face shape, body shape, shoulders and size of hat, how color of the hat affects the face and how to behave when wearing a hat. Let’s see what some hat shapes really do for us.

The latest fashionable Panama hat with a small brim everybody wears looks good on tall and not so tall women as long as the face is oval. This is not a hat for a round face. The Borsalino, a hat similar to a Panama with a larger brim fits better a round face.
(Click on each photo to view it larger).

J.Crew-Panama-Women(J.Crew-Panama-Women)

The floppy hat will swallow a small face on a short person. This hat is perfect for a tall woman with a wide open face or with an oval face and broad shoulders. The floppy hat must not be too droopy to the point of covering the face and it is not very becoming. Is there something to hide under there?  That is what I would think.

Urban Outfitter Floppy Hat(Urban Outfitter Floppy Hat)

A hat with wide soft brim should be contained within the shoulders as this one from French Connection below.

French Connection Wide Brim
French Connection

A wide turned up brim hat is not for women with a round face either, as it enhances the roundness of the face, but a turned down brim hat will disguise a wide face, it is perfect for oval faces and women with a short forehead. A forehead is considered short if the distance between hairline and eyebrows is less than 3” – thus this person should wear hats more towards the back of the head and not over the forehead.

My Hats

The face is the most important feature. We wear hats as a protection from the sun, to make an outfit original, to look stylish, to accent an outfit and to enhance the face not to suppress it. Colors will reverberate on the face. If the hat is black and the skin pale, the face will look even more pale with the reflection of the black color on the skin. If the skin has a pink tone stay away from yellow color hats. Shoulders come into this play as well. If shoulders are too wide and the hat is small, the person will be out of proportion and vice versa.
Fashion is all about proportions, we need to know how to build them.

Ball caps are for men and this is my opinion. Women wear them for a bad hair day, to a football game, shopping for groceries, or to stroll a baby in the park. Ball caps do absolutely nothing to improve a woman’s beauty.  I would suggest to leave them to the men and relegate the sweat suit to the gym only.

Hats determine the way we behave and walk. Have you ever tried on a hat in the store? Suddenly you feel different, suddenly you see yourself in a different light.
A hat almost imposes us to adopt a style that makes us feel special and completes our character.

Women have stopped wearing hats on an everyday basis in the name of freedom from frills and I am all for that, we all have a hectic life. What I don’t understand is why women have adopted a careless way to cover the body with clothes that often are not suitable for who they are. The way famous women dressed a long time ago still appeals to us and we are still admiring their style, why is it….? What are we unconsciously missing…? Maybe it is time to change. Ciao,

Feeling Cool In Cool Fashion Colors | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to a new episode of my Friday Fashion.
All the pastel spring/summer colors of this year are creeping up in my wardrobe and I am letting them for the first time. Men and women will wear pastel colors indifferently as pink (Quartz) is a new color for men and light blue (Serenity) for women, or both together to create a hipster combination for both sexes. It is a symbolic color combination that represents what is going on in our culture. (Click on each photo to view it larger).

Pink for men seems a new extravagance to mark the duality of society, so it has been said, but those of us who have studied History of Costume know that in 1500-1700 men wore pink ruffled shirts under a jerkin and women wore intricate embroidered light blue dresses. These two unisex pastels were the most common of the pastels gamma that men and women used in that era interchangeably.

Pink Jerkin(Pink Jerkin – circa 1700s)

I am balancing and calming my year with pastel colors compatible with my skin tone that will also care for my wellness and tranquility. Rose Quartz is a gentle tone, Blue Serenity echoes a serene sky, Lint or green tone brings a closer attachment to earth.

Swet Flower Bag(DressLily.com)

The light colors of 2016 challenge traditional perceptions of color association, which I would have not done in the past. I will try anything and challenge my thoughts before saying: “It’s not for me” and after realizing I might not like it much, at least I will feel cooler  in cool colors this spring and summer. The floral capelet is lightweight and versatile, the two layers allow it to wear as a large scarf, as a shoulder wrap. The large flower in the waist turns into a belt and a necklace, as necessity occurs. The sweet flower bag is new, just arrived and matches well with the new color scheme.

Just remember that your personal colors need to be revised every couple of years, as we add texture, new coloration and age to our skin.
Enjoy a cool summer in cool colors. Ciao,
Valentina

Afternoon With Oscar | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to a new Friday Fashion episode.

Bold, bright, artistic, extravagant and imaginative, this is how I can describe Oscar de la Renta’s exhibition. The hall with deep red walls is just perfect to enhance the beauty and opulence of each piece of clothing inspired by the Spanish period de la Renta spent working for Balenciaga in Madrid. That deep red color transfers in the viewer’s eyes the passion for all Spanish life expressions. (Click on each photo to view it larger).

The Golden Age of Spanish Art influenced young designer de la Renta who drew all the jewel tones from Velázquez’s paintings, Spanish court costumes, royal armor, flamenco dancers and from elaborate embroiders of matadors’ capes. The extravagant evening gowns with cascading ruffles seemed in such a demand that appeared season after season. The hand painted silk kaftans are stunning, look so modern, in fact manufacturers are still making the same style today, unfortunately with less sumptuousness.

The red walls hall is a concentrate of the folk European costumes that inspired Oscar de la Renta. He drew from European history, adopted diverse cultures, used Indian textiles for dresses, created coats with Russian fabrics with beautiful ornamentations and folk Uzbek and Kazakh Ikat-patterned cloth, which details made up Oscar de la Renta’s signature pieces for his ready-to-wear collections.

In 1972 Oscar said that his sole purpose as a designer was to create something women would want to wear “sleek by day and lavish by night”. So he succeeded behind imagination to dress women for over fifty years in sophisticated day wear, understated elegance for evening clothes and in lavishly embellished cocktail dresses. His collections are renowned for their modernity even for today’s style. There is nothing in this exhibition women would not want to wear.

The hall dedicated to the eighteenth century country French inspiration is very playful and I particularly admire the silk fabric wall treatment. Chartreuse color comes through fenestration on white fabrics, making the overall effects soft, airy and delicate just like the exquisite embroidered fabrics of the period. Even though this hall is dedicated to French country-style and the look seems relaxed, floral, almost peasant like, nothing here looks cheap or poor. The designers experimented with a rustic look, giving the wealthy women a playful taste of a simple life in the fields. It was a “make-believe” collection and to reinforce elegance the designer added long trains to some dresses. It’s hard to imagine a peasant working in the field with a long train behind her dress.

French Country – XVIII Century Inspiration

We recognize the evening gowns of the ’70s, so modern, so beautiful and still so very current. It was a fundraiser event that took place in the palace of Versailles where five designers were chosen to represent France. The chiffon and crêpe de chine dresses created a rainbow of pastel colors.

Style From Reggio On Runways | Valentina Cirasola |Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to my Friday Fashion episode.
Calabria, one of the least known southern regions of Italy, sits in the toe of the Italian peninsula boot. The region is not well-known abroad outside Italy, but to Italians, Calabrian food and flavors are highly sought. They encapsulate all the virgin nature of the region, are mostly hand-made and grown naturally. The perfumes industry uses some very fragrant and succulent fruit trees in the making of scents for women and men. What does food and flavor have to do with fashion? It does.
(Click on each photo to view it larger).

BergamotTie

People of the region are making every possible effort to keep nature intact and use the natural resources available. They are moving toward innovations always referring to traditions, especially when it comes to create something fashionable. Bergamot orange, a fragrant fruit the size of an orange with a yellow color similar to a lemon, is the pride of the region as it lends itself to manufacture eco-friendly colorful fabrics besides perfumes and cosmetics.

Men will wear ties made of silk and cork fabric with the flower of succulent plants pinned on the lapel. They will also wear ties made of bergamot flowers, or papillions made of silk and cork fabric.

People of Calabria have learned from the earth and are turning their notions to manufacture natural fabrics increasingly moving away from products made from oil and petroleum. We are extremely grateful to the superior minds of the fashion operators in Calabria. Wearing clothes made of new fabrics such as grass and cork fiber is healthy, fun and colors are vibrant to keep us in a cheerful state. Ciao,

Fringes In The Wind | Valentina Cirasola |Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to a new Friday Fashion episode.
Since a couple of years ago fringes have shown up on clothing and all fashion accessories, even on shoes. It is a kind of Bohemian, hippy, late 1960’s style revival, when wearing this clothing with fringes, beads, headband and used clothes meant searching for spontaneity, expressing free love, and expanding consciousness. It was an era when youth fought against war, civil right, rejected institutions and all constrictive thinking. The new concept of fringes expresses today’s casual living and leisure time. It has no other social connotation, it is only a revival of something that made history and still looks good.
(Click on each photo to view it larger).

Avenue32-Wine(Avenue 12)

Now, if you have a leather jacket with zippers, pockets, whistles and bells keep it in your closet, perhaps that style will come around again. This year’s leather jacket is simpler, looser, lightweight, soft and deconstructed of frills, almost like a second shirt. Colors are powdery, allusive, and suggestive of softness, they are the colors seen in other eras: soft pink, dusty pink, mauve, cream, antique gold, baby blue, or pearl grey. Wine is one of the dark colors.

LuisaViaRoma2

(LuisaViaRoma)

The new leather jacket has elbow sleeves or 3/4 sleeves, no buttons, no zippers and no interior lining, its very long, sassy fringes makes the length of the jacket. With elbow sleeves, it is OK to show the long sleeves of the garment wore underneath.  Due to its lightweight, we will be able to wear it even in the summer.

Would you like to wear it together with a fringed skirt? I wouldn’t do it. Keep the look interesting, clean, smart and not confused.

Woven Illusion | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to a new Friday Fashion episode.
The pleasure of creating something with hands, something that came out of my creativity is immeasurable. Knitting, crocheting, fabric art have returned strongly and I am happily riding the current.

For 2016 knitwear fashion we will see cropped knitwear layered with blouses, high-rise tailored pants and beautiful shirts. We can wear poncho over preppy skirt in the look of Chloe’.
(Click on each photo to view it larger).

or  oversized knitted pieces with voluminous sleeves for comfort and coziness. Try to layer them with slim jeans and architectural statement jewelry that will really speak geometry. Large pendants over sweaters are the rage this year and hats with glittering embellishments. Fringes will dance around you when you walk. Lots of knitwear with fringes this year.

We like fur, but we don’t want to kill animals to decorate our body with their fur. Ecological, faux fur has been the solution for many years. This year at Pitti’s fashion week in Florence Italy some interesting knitwear have been presented, showcasing Bio Fur Yarn that perfectly reproduces the fur of animals in the wilderness. I like the furry knitwear designer Laura Biagiotti created to wear with sheer long skirts.

The secret this year is in the heavily texture yarn fibers, almost like taking a surprising journey through undisclosed mines. With smooth surface revealing unexpected metallic sparkles we can create stunning design of gems in the earth and soft nuances of semi precious stones.

Lace and Pearls | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to my Friday Fashion episode.
I have been away from this column for a while, trying to detox from the Internet. While I was in that mode, I studied trends and customs of our society. I found new treasures on my way. The South of Italy strikes again. Yes, the fashion capital in Italy is Milan and everyone who wants to make a mark converges there, but in the deep south of Italy, in small country towns there are people creating distinctive and original fashion.
(Click on each photo to view it larger).

Bracelets

Mixed(all jewelry and photos are made by Lace and Pearls)

This is the case of Diamante (Diamond), a small quaint coastal town in Calabria home of “Lace and Pearls”. Does it sounds like a good title for a Victorian novel? It is in fact a brand jewelry made with Soutaches and cabochons. Soutache braiding has its origins in Russia and Eastern Europe, when dresses were highly decorated with silk ribbons, strings, rosettes and lace.

Blue Necklace

Rosangela Manca, the designer of this new fashion jewelry revived the art of braiding Soutache cording and completes each intricate piece with pearls and semi precious stone. Her creations are sold in prominent perfume and jewelry shops on the Italian peninsula.

Parure

Mixed2

The designer’s tagline says she “await us in the magical world of Lace and Pearls”. Perhaps we should pay a visit to her shop on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The weather is warm there, food is good, people is friendly, Diamante it is a vacation destination, combining business and pleasure is perfect.

Just a note: in Diamante town, a chili peppers festival takes place in the summer…. Very hot stuff.

January In White | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to my Friday Fashion episode.
In this cold month of January I cannot carry on thinking of spring just yet. I want to live in the moment, enjoying this season, feeling the cold wind on my face and wearing cozy clothes on grey days. Welcome every change of season.

January is the month to wear white and not because we are going to a ski resort, but because it is a cozy color to roll in. A city winter white coat should be ample, loose fit enough to give you space to wear a sweater or layered clothes underneath with a large collar or hood to embrace you in warmth. I like my coats with a few deep pockets and frogged closures. Fabrics for a winter white coat should be light and warm for easy wear. It should contain mixed wools, cashmere, merino, alpaca, or a mixture of all and it should be scotch guarded on for easy cleaning.

A white coat is versatile, easy to wear with jeans, any regular pants or fuseaux (leggings). With a white coat I would not wear white shoes and bags, it’s January after all. The accessories should be the accent. For a sober look, colors can range from warm beige, saddle, tobacco to grey and black. For a more playful look other colors can find their way in the mixing. White coat over white garment is the classic combination, perfect for brunette or red hair women, but not for blond women.

Long time ago I wore real fur hats, now I wear ecological furs. I like that feeling of sinking my head in the soft fur even though it is faux. Gloves and scarf will add the finish touch. I just ordered my houndtooth long gloves and now I am ready to face the cold weather.

Stay warm and cozy. Make time for a stop at a café for a hot cocoa. Ciao,
