Exceptional Colors in 2019 | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Some things are not born together, perhaps are born in a different era or meant for different purposes and like magic, they look good together when I see them together.

This beaded collar with golden stones was born in the ’40s way before my time, I found it at an antique store, fell in love and brought it home with me. I have worn it ever since I spotted it, almost twenty years ago. I have worn it alone, over a white shirt, over an open generous décolletage, paired with other jewelry and lately with this ceramic face designed by a local artist. It seemed expensive twenty years ago, it was a frivolous buy, I have made so much use of it through the years that it is part almost of my everyday dressing up.

Trends to me mean nothing, it feels almost as if someone wants to pull me by the nose to make me do things their way. I use trends as guidelines and from there I make my own choices and style. In my TV show, you will see how I am using the 2019 colors dictated by the industry and how I steer away with my solutions.

My love for colors extends beyond the meaning of each color. It’s about the power, the vibration, the energy each one brings and how I can stay on track with harmony, health and internal peace using colors. Next year, I will start new seminars on these subjects and colors. For now, enjoy the video and visualize you in the new palettes I suggested. Welcome to November Friday Fashion new episode.
I knew in this 2019 coming year, colors take inspiration from food. With all the talk of organic, farm to table food, slow food movement and colorful food to help balance or activate the chakras, I was waiting for some of those colors to reach our fashion and our interiors. It will be fun to see raspberry and all the berry colors combined soft pinks, saffron, salmon, chocolate and a light green just to refresh the beautiful warm colors of 2019. Now, we can focus on the memory of food and the sensory experience we have with real heartwarming foods and transfer those experiences in out clothes.
Ultra Violet continues to rule not alone but with rich gold, brandy color, camel color, and tan color.

Combine all berry colors as you like. Add coffee, chocolate, caviar, gold, and some amethyst dust.
Purple increases intuition, it calms psychological disorders, balances physical and spiritual energies. For these reasons has been called the “color of wisdom”.

Enough of minimalism, these are glorious colors, let’s make our clothes in 2019 filled with timeless opulence and bring to light our femininity and power.

Hat Statement | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Last Friday, I showed this cloth package. Inside there is something I bought at a store which uses new and donated fabrics to make new garments or “fresh vintage” as they call it. This store is in tune with the concept of saving the environment. Instead of giving away a paper or plastic shopping bag, this store puts the purchases in a cloth and closes it like a candy. I said I was going to disclose the content on my next Friday Fashion.

Here it is, a large pie hat with a few frills hanging in the back. The beauty and the attraction of the hat is all in the back. The front has only a large elastic black band.

And this is the way I wear it. What do you think?

Some people think one must have the right face to wear hats. Nothing can be more false, there is a hat for every face, just need to find it, maybe need to find it with the help of a designer who has a clinical eye and can balance all the lines of the body, skin textures, skin colors and shape of the head with the right hat.

Hats have many functions, from elegant, casual, and very sporty. They add an interesting element to the outfit, they hide a bad hair day, and add an aura to the face, with the hat one even assumes a completely different behavior and attitude. I believe we should go back to dress for ourselves first, and bring back that charm women had in the past. Are you encouraged to wear hats? Ciao,

Welcome to my Friday Fashion.
Ricochet is a French word meaning “Bounce”. It’s true, fashion goes into cycles and every 20-30 years comes back as new, but to make fashion out of found fabrics and remnants is a real art. This is what Jill Pillot does. A native of Belgium, Jill brought with her all her creativity, artistry and love for fabrics when she crossed the ocean at age of 21 and landed in America. Her story is so fascinating that I have invited her to my TV show next November to tell it with her words. Emigrants usually work twice as harder than locally born people to prove that nothing faces them in the making of their dreams. She wanted to become a fashion designer, lived rocambolesque events until one-day things started to fall in place.

She owns a beautiful Bohemian fashion store, well decorated and full of her creations. One doesn’t really know where to look first, there is no focal point, brain/eye activity is very fast, now you are looking at something beautiful here and a second later you spot something else more interesting than the previous item. I was attracted by the various styles of lighting, from modern to vintage, country to funky, those light fixtures share the space beautifully, a space lined with whitewashed wood walls and wood floor. In there she teaches fashion, sewing, and modeling. This is a true treasure trove of beautifully orchestrated fashion mixed with some décor pieces and a plethora of fun events.

Her fashion creations are unique and are meant for people who appreciate art in clothing. She produces original, one-of-a-kind pieces due to the limitation of fabrics. Her approach to fashion is free, mathematical calculations and patterns are out of the window, she rather instead piecing various textures and colors together. This is the old fashion European way of constructing a garment, as my mom did as well as a designer. Jill lays fabrics on the table and sees the direction she wants the fabric to take, just by following her instinct, then sews it together. The result is unstructured, flowing pieces without sizes. In fact, the amount of fabric she has to work with determines the size of each garment. I will leave the rest of Jill’s interesting story for my TV show.

Today, In Brown And Black | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

The combination of black and brown has been one of my all-time favorite combinations. It is classy and smart, elegant and casual for all hours of the day. It gives out feelings of solidity and dependability, thus black and brown is perfect for business, daytime events, lunches and early afternoon cocktails, but brown alone it is not gratifying after five o’clock in the afternoon. Brown is not proper to look radiant at an evening affair. Under the nightlight brown becomes muddy, unless a lot of glitters incrust a brown outfit and black accessories, shoes, clutch, gloves and even some black-gold jewelry detail the outfit.

Brown it is also the color of the Earth and wood, thus we feel enveloped and secure in brown, adding black to it, becomes powerful and mature.
Certainly it is not a color combination for teenagers.

Pretend the color brown is chocolate and all of a sudden you feel sexy.

All the primary colors make brown: red, yellow and blue. Pairing brown with jewel tone colors is exquisite and playful. Today, as Autumn is approaching, I want to prepare the wardrobe with some brown and black, but that’s not all. I know brown will show all its beauty when is paired with sapphire, topaz, ruby, emerald, gold and silver, I just want to make sure I have plenty of these colors.

Today, we can wear brown shoes with a black outfit and vice versa, or even try the jewel tone accessories I just mentioned. Can you imagine a black and brown outfit, with blue sapphire suede shoes? I can.

In my photos, the brown and black outfit is the same, but it changes the feel just by changing the scarf and the shoes.
As you see it is that easy. Please feel encouraged to use colors the way no other will do, it is energizing. Ciao,

Do You Dress For Summer Heat Or Your Body? | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

I don’t mind Summer, it is a cheerful season and one that gives the permission to be lazy. I just don’t like the heat. How can I have one without the other? Yes, I might lay in shady areas sipping cool drinks all day, or I can be at the beach all day, but how do I fit work and writing into this pleasant scene?
If it is not vacation time yet and must face the daily life in the summer heat, then consider wearing flowing clothes that will move the air around your body, but keep in mind the shape of your body and try not to dress for the heat. It is so easy to get into skimpy clothes when the weather erupts to indecent degree. Grazing vulgarity to fight the heat is unfortunately a scene I see in the streets often.

A few Summers ago, I discovered the comfort of tunics. They don’t cling to the body, they are ample enough to allow air to circulate around the body, they are versatile to cover a bikini or go to work wearing a pair of skinny pants. They come with colorful prints and solid colors, easy to wear in the city even with city shorts, Bermuda and Capri pants.

Most of my tunics have fringes or tassels, I love the rhythm they create when I walk. I try to find very long tunics to which I make various knots to create high and low lengths in places I think look better for my body.

The last touch to make a tunic a Summer striking piece: accessorize it with chunky jewelry, flat shoes, or chunky heels if wearing skinny pants, a striking pair of sunglasses and a hat. I wear large handbags all the time, however even a cute cutch will work or a shoulder strap sac.

It doesn’t take much to look good and smart, but you must know your body and know how to highlight beautiful features and hide the parts you don’t like. Ciao,

The Art Of Mixing and Matching | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Welcome to my Friday episode of fashion.
Have you found yourself in the situation of looking at your closet full of clothes and saying you have nothing to wear? It’s a common problem most women have.
The reasons for that are attributed to price of clothes being too affordable, discounts, special offers for any kind of holiday and buying on impulse.

To control a wardrobe is easier than you think.
1. Buy only the clothes you need.
2. Buy only items that look good on you for your shape and complexion.
3. Buy mostly solid colors and only a few items with prints.
4. Buy items that are easy to mix and match with other items in your closet.

If you master this concept, it will be so much easier to get dressed in the morning even if it is dark.

This red and ochre combination is easy on the eye, but vibrant for any season. The 3/4 sleeves red top is light enough for Spring, Summer and Fall. The animal print bag is red on the other side and adds a rhythm to the ensemble. With that large buckle on the bag, I would go with a golden pair of shoes and golden tone accessories.

Make it a summer combination:
change the ochre color pants for a white pants, white sandals, white sunglasses and a red hat.
Take away the birds Salvatore Ferragamo’s scarf and substitute it for a knitted net shawl like this one from Free People.

Make it a winter combination:
Leaving the red top and animal print bag, change the pants to a darker color, black, brown, grey or even red, wear shoes the same colors of the pants, it will visually elongate your legs, or ankle boots, add a waist length jacket with gold buttons and a red fedora hat, why not?
You will be ready, in a smart winter outfit, to go from work, to happy hours or to a restaurant.

Mixing and Matching is an art that will save you money and will always give you a smart glow.

You have looked at your clothes for a long time, a fresh eye will see different things than you do.

Summer Fashion Findings | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Last month, I was in Europe trotting on the Côte d’Azur, soaking the fizzy air, the weather was not too hot, pleasantly ventilated and the crowd of tourists was limited. My goal was not to spend time at the beach, I have done that, only walking on cobblestones of small villages, talking to people, discovering things, curiosities and food.

In a hole in the wall, as a figure of speech, I found a small artisanal shop of sustainable fashion products. Everything in there was hand-made or ecologically made, natural dyes, natural fibers and no animal products, such as leather or furs.

These items in various shades of orange attracted my attention. I happened to have an orange pair of mirrored glasses on me, the rest was easy.

Hand embroidered and hand painted tunic, with a salmon orange hat and a papaya bag. It looks so fantastic when I wear it all together.

This barrel, multicolored bag really got my attention. I was asking myself what is it? Is it a bucket, a tube, or a beach thing? Well… I got it because it is hard to tell and I wanted to puzzle people.

Often, it doesn’t take much money to build a nice wardrobe. It’s important to understand the function of each piece, if shapes and colors look good with your complexion and if the new items can be paired with everything already existing in the closet.

Elegant people, stores and yachts fill the Rivera. I could have come away with a handsome yacht owner, instead I came away with a pair of blue velvet Karl Lagerfeld pantoufles, call them sneakers if you would, but not on the Riviera. Two huge rhinestone buckles look as if they could illuminate an entire city. In addition they were discounted 50%, a real snip, if it happens on the French Riviera!
Never use the word “cheap”.

Marrying In May Like A Royal | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

My seamstress shop this month is filled from wall to wall with brides of all shapes and colors trying their bridal gowns on. Some of the dresses I saw while I was waiting, I would have not worn to a dog fight, others were the wrong style for the bride’s shape and, maybe only one, I would have approved. It was funny to see how some brides don’t think much of themselves, they put on anything as long as resembles a wedding gown. Getting married is one of the most important days in a woman’s life, especially if it is the first time, the bridal gown should be spectacular and enhance the best feature of a bride.

May is the preferred month to get married. May is fresh, the air is fizzy, flowers are in all in bloom, colors of nature are sharp, and everything smells good, the choice of flowers is perfect this month.
A British historic wedding is just about ready to happen. What if you want to get married like a royal, what would you do?

Let’s start from the invitations. If your wedding is more than a bunch of friends in jeans meeting at the beach, the invitations should describe the proper attire required for the ocasion.
Morning Coat, Lounge Suit or Black Tie for men and Day Dress with Hat for women. A night-time wedding does not require a hat.

There are rules to learn for wearing a hat. Your guests should choose a hat that does not block everybody’s view. Large brims and convoluted designs yes, are fine, as long as the hat is made with a see-through fabric and must not resemble too much like the mother of the bride’s hat. Usually a hat matches the color of the garment, a strong color outfit requires a strong color hat. This is not a set rule, often it is done this way. Wear the hat tilted to the right of the face, that’s is the proper way. I didn’t learn this anywhere, just felt right to wear my hats tilted on the right. Never take the hat off, not even at the dining table, unless the wedding reception is over.

A pair of gloves is one thing a bride should never be without. Truly, I would love to see women wearing gloves again and not only for formal affairs. Wearing gloves changes the character and the posture of a woman. With gloves, there are no sneakers, ripped jeans, messy hair, or mismatched colors.
I think gloves adds a touch of class and femininity, although, I am not so sure young women these days want to be feminine anymore. There is, however, in the crowd of middle age women, a new growing sensitivity towards dressing up in style.

As for the flower creations, keep it natural, don’t use flowers with strong scents, some people have allergy to flowers, keep a relaxed feel, be in tune with the gentle nature of May flowers. Some peonies are not fragrant, just look very beautiful and plump, mix them with silver birch stems with foliage and royal fern. I learned that’s what the British will do for a coming wedding.

I also learned that a yellow gold is the preferred metal for wedding band to attract the positive energy of the sun on you. Welsh mines produce the most valuable yellow gold, for your information. You don’t have to go that far to get the best wedding ring, any yellow gold will do the job and if it has some yellow diamond in it, more power to you.

In a royal wedding, when trumpets play, you know something is happening, either the Queen/King has arrived, or the bride is at the church’s steps. In your wedding, plan to have some musical instruments playing your grand entry. The sweet music of many violins played a classical music announcing the arrival of one of my clients at her wedding ceremony and it was magical.

I have played with the idea of having a royal wedding, why not? It is not forbidden to dream. We know what happens to people who dream big, they end up living in a castle with a prince consort.
Your wedding can be as royal as you make it with pompous and circumstances. You can tone it down or make it as visible as you like. The important thing is to organize your wedding to reflect who both of you are as a couple starting a new life, how you want your guests to feel in your special day and that you the bride look radiant. What The Iris Tells You | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Often, famous people inspire us, we want to be like them, wear the same style of clothes, shape, and color our hair the way they do, or copy other aspects of their personality. That’s what magazines do, portray artificial beauty to sell cosmetics, fashion and plastic surgery. In real life, those famous people, might not be so attractive… Before copying someone else’s style, stop and think, is the style of that famous person good for you? Does it suit your personality or character? Does it improve your look? Our uniqueness distinguishes us from everybody else, knowing how to exalt it and correct some defects in the body is an art.

Usually, a person will match the colors of the clothes to the skin color/texture, to the color of hair/eyes and to the body shape. We do the same when we decide on a new haircut and color, but this is not enough. I think a hairdresser is like a tailor, they both cut according to the body shape and create something custom that only fits that person. However, this is not always true with hairdressers. I met a lot of incompetent people who, if only can hold scissors in their hands and know how to mix colors, can be considered hairdressers, resulting in so many people with a wrong haircut for their head shape.

I think hairdressers should know how to interpret the cranium’s shape of a person and design only for that cranium. Knowing the formation of a skull means knowing when to increase or decrease hair volume, where to cut and where to thin out. A hairdresser should know how to frame with the right haircut an oval-shaped face, a round face or a triangle face just by looking at the bone structure. To me, it is a logical thinking.

How about hair color? I found most of my answers to colors in the iris of the eyes, for any situation, whether I choose colors for clothes, hair, home environment and even gardens. It has been said the eyes are the mirror to the soul and that’s the reason I draw inspiration from them. The nuances of the iris suggest which shade or highlight to give to the hair for a natural look or a nice three-dimensionality.

A dark eye might have an iris with a yellow tint, a copper tone, or red nuances, one of those is the highlight to use on the hair. A light color eye might have an iris with a dark blue ring, a Chartreuse ring, or even a purple ring and grey/brown nuance. One of these will be the nuance of the hair.

In my youth, I knew an Egyptian woman transplanted in Italy, living next door from my family. She had one purple eye with a visible yellow splash in the iris and the other eye was yellow-green with a purple iris, all this rarity set in an olive color skin. Aside from her beautiful eyes, I can never forget how she matched the color of her clothes to show the gift of her rare eye colors.
