Beneath My Feet | Valentina Cirasola | Author and Designer

Beneath my feet usually there is a beautiful floor. I am one of those designers proposing clients stone flooring instead of wall-to-wall carpet. I tell them about the versatility of stones, the easy care and low maintenance stone require, how easy it is to live with stones and how much more hygienic stones are versus carpet.

In my home I have a warm, beautiful terracotta tiles floor, but when I go out to my garden, I walk on grass, gravel, weeds, stepping-stones and around all of that there is the food I grow. I cultivate many vegetables, fruit and a variety of tomatoes, which are as sweet as candy. Some years my tomatoes come in a great abundance and I make a ton of sauce for the winter, turn them in sun-dried tomatoes, I use them for salads, or eat them off the vines like fruit. In fact tomato is a fruit and not a vegetable.

Under My Feet

Tomatoes_Under_My_Feet

One of the foods I have eating since my early days of life and keep on eating to these days is bread and tomatoes. Some people call it bruschetta, but the type I eat is really bread and tomato. Bruschetta is a toasted or grilled sliced bread, with a garlic spread and a lot of toppings. For my bread and tomato, I only need a fresh crusty bread, type of ciabatta or Pugliese style, basil leaves, olive oil, sea salt, fresh chili pepper and of course tomatoes. I open the bread roughly, not even with a knife, split open the tomatoes on top of the bread allowing all the juices to penetrate the bread. I season it with salt, chili pepper, basil leaves and a generous swirl of extra virgin olive oil. Done! I eat it open face and not as a sandwich. Next to it, a piece of Italian Gorgonzola cheese is always welcomed. This is often my breakfast or lunch.

CourseTomatoes

Sometimes, I spend hours creating gourmet food that have appearance and taste of a five-star dish and guess what? To me nothing will ever compare to bread and tomato.

I always wonder why such a simple type of food with so few poor ingredients taste so divine and it is so filling? The answer is in the land, the sun and singing to the vines. Ciao,
Valentina

Inspiration | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

Every home-buyer has a different need when looking to buy a house. I wanted a house in a good neighbor serviced by major freeways and highways, not too far from stores and a ton of architectural features. I found one with mansard ceilings, some odd-shaped windows, natural light and a good size yard for cultivating some food. Well, the yard was sunburned and no plants in sight. I had some serious garden work in front of me to let it come alive the way it is now. The rest had potentials and I took full advantage.

I found inspiration everywhere from nature, fashion, architecture, antiques and my own travels. Creating my cocoon was not a difficult search. I looked through photos of my gardens and instantly I knew my bathroom had to be yellow and my bedroom ocean blue, which is my essence color and it agrees with my zodiac sign. (Click on each photo to view it larger)

Lemon Display

Red is my passion color. Some of my red fabrics gave me the inspiration for textures and shapes in my bedroom.

This field of wild flowers inspired me to create the Parisian style lamp in the corner of this bathroom.

Objects | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

The object I buy for my home must have a double function: be stylish and useful. One without the other for me is always a deterrent from buying on impulse. Last month, I was browsing in a home décor store for new ideas and found a cute white ceramic peanut dish with a texture of a peanut imprinted on the exterior surface. I am a lover of warm nuts served with a glass of red wine or a cold beer regardless of the season. I think the taste is enhanced when nuts are warm.

Peanut_Dish

As you all know nuts are a good source of protein and they are a type of sociable food, you cannot have only one nut without having a few more, while conversation flows and time passes in good company. They are perfect munchies for playing cards, watching a film or visiting with friends. In my house often I serve warm nuts at the end of a dinner with a cheese selection.

Peanut_Dish2

The peanut dish looks like a giant peanut. It is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. It makes a great gift for any occasion at the magic price of only $7.95, available at any local and online CB2 stores, made in China…. oh well…..

Before presenting it to someone as a gift, fill it up with mixed nuts and put a nice bow around it, or create a good looking package.

This discovery could have not happened at a better time, in fact as soon as august hits, I keep my eyes open for gifts to people I want to reward at the holidays, thus I will stock a few of them now.
There you have it a useful and stylish home object, which looks good as table center piece even when not in use.  How many objects do you have in your home that have a double function? Ciao,
Valentina

Al Fresco | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

A friend asked me what is the meaning of decoration “Al Fresco”, hmm!!! It intrigued me that she did not know the term Al Fresco”, but I was not surprised. We designers often assume that everybody know our decorating jargon. Many words or names in architecture and decorating have a Latin root, reminiscent of the Greek-Roman civilizations, when style was orderly and classic. However, both field of architecture and home interior décor abound of Italian and French words as well. “Al Fresco” in Italian means In The Fresh Air.

The ancient populations of the Mediterranean Basin led business in ways unthinkable for today’s time: in the sauna, in public bathrooms while doing personal ablutions, in the food market, or while eating and enjoying life, basically most of the time they conducted business outside of the four walls, under the sun, the moon rays and in the breeze.
“Al Fresco” is not a way to decorate, it is a lifestyle, it is a concept of relaxation and productivity at the same time and it is an inclination of being sociable.

In the last scene of the 2009 film “Julie and Julia” based on the life of chef Julia Child, impersonated by Meryl Streep, Julie organizes a dinner al fresco on the rooftop of her apartment (above a pizza shop), ending a yearlong saga of blogging and cooking from Julia Child’s book. Her last recipe was a “désossé canard en surprise” (boneless duck surprise) that she served to her friends on the terrace looking over New York City lights.

img_0411(Photos above: Property of Domenico Cafarchia)

What you need to create an “Al Fresco Living” first and most important is an attitude and the willingness to put up with insects, bees and birds, too much heat or cool weather and possibly a few eyes of the neighbors looking in your space.  Then you need a terrace, a balcony, a belvedere, an atrium, or a patio and finally a view. If you do not have a view, you can create a special ambience within the walls of your surroundings. Choose the theme of your liking: Bohemian, country, beach, ethnic and more. Choose the style: French, Italian, contemporary, classic, colorful, or monochrome, you get the idea. Find the right lights to create ambience: lanterns, rope lighting, a string of bulbs or floor lamps, add a wall fireplace or a portable type and heat lamps for warmth, numerous comfortable seating, large pillows, sofas and aRécamier for a sweet afternoon nap. Complete the décor with colorful accessories, greenery and plants.

You got the area decorated, now you need a table for food. Imagine your new “al fresco living” with an outdoor dinner table set or a flowing buffet that allows your guests to sit where is comfortable to them. Which is it going to be?
I hope you can cook, you know that people go where there is good food and good drinks, as in Julie & Julia.

Living Terrace

Right now, I am designing an empty ex-terrace area into a living space enclosed in large glass panels through which the lush vegetation outside opens up before the eyes of observers. The terrace will look like my client is living in the trees at the top floor of her house. It is the reverse of an “al fresco living”,  the glass panels will protect her and the furniture from the weather, but the feeling will be the same as if she was living outdoor. The décor will be contemporary and colorful as in my material boards above. You too can have my help in changing an area into an outdoor living space, just ask me or contact me. Ciao,
Valentina

Freedom And Food On Bastille Day | Valentina Cirasola |Author and Designer

The fourteenth of July is Bastille Day, a day that commemorates the start of the French Revolution with the goal of restoring freedom and unity of the French people. On July 14th, 1789 revolutionaries stormed the fortress prison Bastille known for holding political prisoners whose writings had displeased the royal government. Bastille Day is celebrated globally both by France and her former colonies, as well as many cities in the US.

Today at Milan Expo, the international food fair, at the French Pavilion the French are celebrating their National Day (Fête National – 14 Juliet) singing the Marseillaise, their National Anthem, tasting fantastic French traditional food and dancing at Le Bistrot du Lion with DJ Breakbot, author of famous song “Baby I’m yours”.

At the Pavilion of France before the Food Truck Peugeot, visitors can meet breeders of Lacaune race sheep and indulge in unusual taste experiences of the Roquefort for apéritif as well as for dinner. They will discover how to accompany cheese in many surprisingly different ways. A brick bread oven has been installed for the preparation of the famous French baguette and crispy, buttery croissants.

The central theme of 2015 Milan Expo is: “Feed The Planet, Energy For Life”. For six months visitors will enjoy tasting food of 140 countries that will show the best of their technology in guaranteeing healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the planet and its equilibrium. Here all the countries will talk about the problems of nutrition, the resources of our planet, promotion of sustainable agriculture, promotion of the pleasure of cooking with balanced nutrition and how can we feed the world today and tomorrow.

Look inside the French pavilion.

Meanwhile since it is a French celebration, visitors of the Expo should indulge in French food in all its forms. Happy National Day to all the French people, enjoy the celebration of freedom from oppression. Tonight for dinner: pâte brisée tart with roasted vegetables, brie and ham with a nice bordeaux. Ciao,

Why Not Red, White and Blue? | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to another episode of my Friday Fashion.
Ever since we are born we are taught to use all our senses and to use primary colors to express our emotions, that’s how we learn which colors make us feel good or not and we learn to attribute gender to colors: girls must be pink and boys must be blue. Some of us have an intuition about colors or see the color of love, the energy of colors, or the aura of each person they meet, but most people don’t have the gift of intuition of how colors work together and are generally afraid of colors, they will preclude the possibility of using colors to their advantage.

Colors communicate with the heart, mind, body and soul, making us feel good on all levels. Human beings are light, we vibrate light, it is like we plug-in the electricity of life through colors. Without light, there is no life, and without color, life is sterile, boring and dark. Remember the primary colors you learned to use in the elementary school and how happy they made you feel? Why should we not wear them as adults and limit ourselves only to certain colors?

Red White & Blue
Here it is my idea of primary colors, which happens to be the patriotic colors of 4th of July celebration as well. Don’t be afraid of wearing red, white and blue, if it is playful and tastefully done. In my color scheme, you will see two simple solutions, one with a dress jacket and a lacy top and one with a leather jacket and a polo shirt. The pencil jeans are the same for both solutions and so is the scarf, which can be worn with or without the jacket. My personal preference for shoes in this color scheme is definitively the vintage shoes.
Invert the colors by making blue the small 10% of the combination and red a major color and you will have a totally different energy, hotter and more vibrant. Your choice.

Coco Chanel

Of course, funky style is easier to do in this patriotic color scheme, as most people would mix and match stars and stripes without rules, but my goal is to bring elegant simplicity that everyone can wear any time of the day. People will remember the person and not the clothes, as Coco Chanel said.
I hope you will have a splendid and safe 4th of July celebration. Ciao,

Can’t Come In With Palazzo Pants | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aWelcome to my Friday Fashion episode.

They are colorful, fun and easy to wear, they flow as you walk and they have a cooling effect in the summer, they are the palazzo pants. Palazzo pants became a popular trend in the late 1960s and early 1970s, now back in fashion more than 50 years later. New ideas in fashion are never really new, they have lived somewhere in different times, in fact, Katharine Hepburn, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich in the ‘30s and ‘40s were the first actresses to wear men style wide-legged cuffed trousers. However, even if in many ways pants have liberated women from cumbersome garments and made easier for women to climb on horses or go in and out of cars, there has been a time, only 50 years ago, when women could not enter an upscale restaurant dressed in trousers, they were considered inappropriate garment for the evening.

Palazzo pants came to solve that problem, as they flare out from the waist to the ankle and look very much like a long skirt when the woman is standing still.

Palazzo pants are perfect for the tall, slender woman. Due to the tube-like shape top and bottom, this kind of pants is becoming on a person with large hips, helping re-balancing the figure and putting it in proportions with the rest of the body. It is not perfect for the short and stocky woman, even if she is on high hills. The choice is yours. Ciao,

Don’t Fight Drought, Embrace It | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

It has been said that “brown is the new green”, really?! I cannot bear seeing my garden in brown after I spent so much money planting flowers and time working to maintain beauty, but here in California we are under a severe drought, to avoid incurring in penalties we must not water lawns and I had to adapt too.  I am looking around in neighborhood and do not like what I see outside the homes, some people are letting their gardens go shabby and it is not necessary. Luckily there are many alternative solutions if you are just starting a new landscape or rethinking the old one.

Before you design garden and curb appeal, create a landscape that removes the water-thirsty lawn, make a chemical-free environment and enhance the outdoor living with beautiful stones to match the exterior colors of the home. Create a sustainable landscape that is not only beautiful, but provides a bio-diverse environment that is gentle on the earth and welcomes the birds, the bees and the butterflies.

Plants to choose for the drought are low-water plants that give an all-season appeal. Mix a variety of ground cover, decorative grasses, fountain grasses and wispy green, orange, pink and purple blades grasses, which move in the wind creating a certain musicality, if you can picture it. I have a bunch of them and love the swing. Alternate colors for interest and intersperse these grasses between the stones, cover the ground with pea gravel instead of grass to allow excess water to soak into the earth rather than run off into the street and use lots of colorful pots in which you might want to plant some vegetables, or more cacti and succulents.

Don’t dwell on drought, embrace it, water-conserving gardens can be as colorful as any other and you don’t have to spend your weekends cutting grass anymore. Ciao,

Changing Your Perspective | Valentina Cirasola | Interior Designer

How many times I am tempted to cover a long wall with a city view, or a path in the nature!!! Often in my clients’ home I have to go through the process of finding the right wall paint color, only to cover it afterward with photos, prints and paintings or memorabilia, when, in reality, that large wall lends itself for the biggest digital image mural.

Just picture sitting in your home office and look at the view of Manhattan or an inviting warm beach. Granted it might distract you from working and wished you were there. In some people could create the opposite effect, but I find that looking at pretty views is very inspiring and brings out my best ideas.

In the ‘70s mural prints were in fashion for the first time, but they required a lot of glue emitting VOC – Volatile organic compounds, which are organic chemicals that have a high vapor pressure at ordinary room temperature. Today wall prints are eco-friendly, safe for you and the environment. There are companies that will turn your favorite photo into a digital mural print. The process is not any more expensive than applying wallpaper. I added a link below, check it out. http://www.worldwidewallmurals.com

Your large digital print will open up the room, your perspective will change and you will feel an integral part of the scenery. Ciao.

Another Couturiers Left This World | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Girl-Pink-Green-1aThey make us dream, they make us stylish, beautiful, sexy and they leave us with huge memories.
Micol Fontana left us today at 102. She is one of the three Fontana sisters, acclaimed fashion designers-couturiers since 1930.
(Click on each photo to view it larger).

Who cannot forget the controversial dress Anita Ekberg wore in Fellini’s film “La Dolce Vita”? It was the perfect dress for that film, which epitomized the decadent lifestyle of the rich, high-living society and jet set.

Ava Gardner wore Fontana sisters’ dress in the film “Barefoot Contessa” and many of the Fontana’s creations off the screen.

The gracious Audrey Hepburn in the role of a runaway princess who fell in love with a journalist in the movie, “Roman Holiday” also wore Fontana Sister’s creations.

The list of famous people, nobles, royals, presidents’ wives or daughters and Hollywood actresses the Fontana sisters dressed in their career is very long, even Alitalia flight attendants and official hostesses at the UN proudly showcased Fontana’s fashion on their bodies. In my many years of traveling, I have always thought the Alitalia flight stewardess are the most elegant of all the airlines’ employees.

The Fontana sister’s stories, like most fashion designers, started in the mother’s tailor shop or home-based alterations business. They came from Traversetolo, a small Italian country town between Parma and Modena, where the three sisters inherited their mother dressmaking shop and ended up in Rome, where they opened the first atelier, with the only desire to dress the aristocracy, the rich and famous. Their adventure started at the break of WWII, but the war didn’t stop them from pursuing their dream. They chose Rome as their base while everybody preferred to open fashion houses in Paris, the three sisters defied and resisted boldly that market. They knew the aristocracy could not resist their sexy clothes and so they made it happen.

sorelle-fontana-atelier-micol-zoe-giovanna

Many museums around the world featured the Fontana sisters’ fashion during their career, the awards and articles written about the Fontana abounded. The three sisters Zoë, Micol, and Giovanna possessed glamour and created sumptuous dresses with special attention to women bust, their dresses were easier to wear than their French competitors.

Micol Fontana-fashion and art(Micol Fontana-fashion and art)

The inspiration for their fashion came from eighteenth-century styles and designs of the early Renaissance. Between Parisian haute couture and the originality of the Italian fashion, the three sisters made American women really enamored of the feminine dresses.
Some people cannot be repeatable. Ciao,
