Ethnic Summer | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Welcome to a new episode of Friday Fashion.
Traveling to a foreign country is about learning a different culture, taste new food, approaching local people in their language, trying their customs and bring back some of the beauty to talk about with my friends over a dinner party. Ethnic fabrics, jewelry, and some home décor are usually the things I bring back, hoping I will have a place or a use for them.
Ethnic fashion is about creating a distinctive look wearing a garment of a racial group or foreign society that can be incorporated in the western fashion, just like this mandala skirt below.  It is like celebrating diversity in a personal way.

I would make a spectacular jacket out of this mandala fabric. I found it on Etsy https://etsy.me/2YFropx

Flowing dresses and layered patterns is one of the ways to combine ethnic design.

In the 20th century, western society was smitten by the Eastern far side of the world from the European Bohemian style outfits of the hippies and flower children to the Indian style, China style, Middle Eastern and African style of the ’70s. In the 1990s, approaching the new Millennium, designers felt to reconcile with the ethnicity of distant countries, creating new expressions of eclectic without being too faithful to the style of a particular country. Exotic was a word coined then. If it came from elsewhere, it was exotic and therefore accepted as new and out of the ordinary. Of course, if we look back in history, chinoiserie and silk fabrics were the high styles of Italian and French courts in the 1700s. Their fashion and home décor reflected the acceptance of foreign influence in their culture.

Ethnic Hat by Cicely Gilman

Ethnic Hat by Cicely Gilman

My friend Cicely Gilman hand-embroidered this style hat, reminiscence of the traditional Arab Kufi hat for men. Today, western women can wear this style of hat with modern clothes, casual jeans, or ethnic clothes. However, think how good this colorful hat could highlight a woman stark business outfit and take the serious edge off of it. Cicely is not a person afraid of colors. She produces fabrics for fashion and interiors. Find her bold and vibrant creations here: www.etsy.com/shop/cicelygilman

This necklace is one of my latest purchases on eBay and I will wear it with a very modern outfit. All the little metal beads will make a nice sound when I move, kind of like wearing windchimes and all the nice thoughts will come in. I heard a phrase in the  film Return To Me:
“When bells ring, angels appear”. Perhaps, the sound of this necklace will do it.

Blushing Backstage | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Welcome to a new episode of Friday Fashion.

Pantone today emphasizes “Big Sur Sunset” of California. The light on Big Sur is really different compared to the Mediterranean golden light I am used to seeing at sunset. In those parts of California, the coast is rugged, the roads are winding and the view is breathtaking. The sunset reminds me that occasionally in California the gargoyles spit blush wine, a cool, gentle and refreshing wine for summer days. In the Pantone photo, the blush color melts away into the light blue of the ocean. Immediately, when I saw this photo, I thought of the blush color evening bag I gifted my sister. The clutch is very extravagant with an incrustation of glass and rhinestones that can illuminate a city. I would like her to wear it for her soirées at the theatre.

It seems the display I made for my picture, with the crochet blush fingerless gloves and all the jewelry colors go well with the graphic description Pantone makes about Big Sur Sunset.

Will my sister wear the sky blue floral and gem-studded shoes or the black ones?  I will leave it to her choice.
These shoes are an eye-catcher for sure!

The fashion forecasts say that this blush and powdery color will continue in the next winter season. Some women just look washed out in this color, how you wear it, can be interesting or dull. Free People combine a blush velvet jacket with a graphic t-shirt. I adore Free People fashion.

I hope you are having many Summer blush sunsets. Ciao,

Glammed Up | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

I don’t know many women who like fashion and don’t know about Iris Apfel. She is a geriatric starlet, who became a fashion icon after she stopped working as an interior designer. She is irreverent with her clothes, uses colors in the most extravagant ways, clashes patterns on purpose, and covers her body with the most extraordinary jewelry one will ever find. She can combine tastefully all kinds of jewelry from eclectic, tribal, modern, antique, retro, to golden, silver, wood, plastic, bakelite, glass, stones, hand-painted and a lot of chains. She doesn’t’ like what she calls the “put together” look, she likes all her extravagant combinations to look harmoniously done. She wears unique articles of clothing, although very colorful and bold, they appeal to the senses, always looking beautiful and special and make her look as if she is having a load of fun. That’s what fashion is supposed to do.

What she does with her clothes and the way she dresses outside the standard canons is a real art, it takes courage to be so highly decorated every day. She owns many flats and homes not so much to live in but to host her clothes and jewelry collections.
In her twilight years, she has even signed a contract with a modeling agency to become a geriatric model and wrote a book.

She has been an inspiration to many women, I am one of them. I have never been afraid of colors, or clashing patterns, there are certain things I learned from her, such as wearing bracelets, a lot of them, mixed in all shapes, forms, and colors.

These bracelets on my arm are hand-made wood bracelets, the dark color is Purple Heart, a very rich wood in wine color, and the light color is Marble Wood with beautiful veins. They make a nice wood sound, almost like a wind chime and they are lightweight.

(Click on each photo to view it larger).

Hand-Made Wood Bracelets

I learned to make wood pens, I have three samples in the photo below. The technology is the same, I thought why not make bracelets for me, and wear them just like Iris would. Voila’ I did it. At the moment I am on the roll, many more bracelets will come out in many different types of exotic wood and colors. Perhaps I am on to something. Creativity is never too much.

It seems wood bracelets are a perfect match to a leopard print on a bag, clothes or shoes. Ciao,

Red Under The Rain | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

It has poured down for two months straight. Rain here in California is always an event and car accidents abound during rainy days. I don’t like rain in particular, it’s wet and cold but at least I appreciate the change of season that it brings. Rain cleans spider webs around plants, everything smells fresh, and vegetation in my garden grows lush.

(Click on each photo to view it larger).

Santana Row

Walking in the street during rainy days I see people dressed only in grey or black, curved into themselves, hidden in their hood, as to protect themselves from getting wet. The streets are gloomy, lonely and nobody enjoys this precious gift from the sky. I remember, when I lived in a different latitude, going out under the rain in colorful clothes was fun, we went out for shopping, work or meeting friends in a cafe’ where we could sit in the warmth, enjoy a cup of hot cocoa and watch the rain falling on the cafe’ windows. We had clothes for rain and warm clothes for the winter, we wore gloves, hats, and scarves. Here in California, every day is a casual day. It is almost always sunny and mild, people don’t feel to dress for any occasion, thus when rarely the rain comes, they feel like fish out of the water.

I love to color my days, the greyer it gets, the more I burst into colors. This winter my new red Fedora has made me happy. It seems as if I bought everything to go with the red hat, no I did not, I build my wardrobe according to what I own already. It’s only a matter of remembering what is in the wardrobe and buy items which will combine well with the existent clothes.  To me, this is an art.

Red Fedora Ensemble

This is the month of red, Valentine red, I chose it because I am happy to love every day and to learn new nuances from love.

Fashion offers a lot more than just an identity to society. It doesn’t have to be expensive to sharpen the image of oneself and change the way one feels in the right clothes, not just something that covers the body. Ciao,

Let’s Revive The Spats | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Riding on the sand along the beach, dressed in a period frock of early 1920’s, a red and black fitted jacket with gold buttons, frills coming out from a white shirt underneath, beige riding pants, brown-black leather boots and gloves, my head covered with a woman style top hat and my long blond hair flowing in the wind. I see myself in this idyllic period picture wearing decorative spats fastened under the foot with a strap to protect my beautiful riding trousers and boots from the wet sand. My fantasy runs wild when I see original pieces of clothes!

(Click on the photos to view them larger).

Spats buttoned up along the ankles were fashionable in the early 1900s especially for a man outfit. I remember my mother’s father wearing beige buttoned up spats over his shoes. He was a tall, blue-eyed man, had a very stern attitude and an elegant comportment I haven’t seen in anyone ever since. I didn’t like him that much, he was harsh and narcissist, his name was Angelo and nothing of him resembled an Angel. However, I admired his sharp, very refined and detailed way of dressing up, when he left the house it seemed as if a model left for a fashion show. He was well dressed every day.

I see myself wearing many types of spats, short and long, in Tartans, Boho, Victorian style and much more. They do embellish a common pair of shoes and add originality to any outfit. I found these beautiful examples at maidestreasuries.
https://www.deviantart.com/maidestreasuries/art/Mucha-Golden-Girl-Spats-152241196

In various countries military infantry still wear spats for formal events even today, I love to see pomp and circumstances.

In our modern dressing up, we can do many things, pairing antique, vintage accessories with new modern fashion is actually a very interesting way to dress up.
If the feet and calves are highly decorated keep a simple style up above and use mostly solid colors. Ciao,

Your Face In The Right Colors | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Welcome to a Friday Fashion episode.
Do you always wear the right colors for your complexion? If yes, you are an expert and don’t need to hear anything else. Knowing the right color for your face is half of the battle with any successful outfit.

This week I wore this outfit to conduct my TV show with a fashion designer from Belgium as my guest. The title of the show is: “Stylish Pile”. My guest will explain how to rescue fabrics from worn clothes and make them into a new garment. However interesting this subject was, it is not the subject of today. The reason I chose grey and mustard with a touch of black as the focus of today’s topic is only to talk about the suitable colors around the face. My face doesn’t look good framed with a black color and even if the black is on my torso, still doesn’t look good.
For my TV show, I have chosen to wear grey and mustard with a touch of black because we are in the winter, I wanted the colors to go with the dull nature of January but I didn’t want a sunless outfit. Grey doesn’t seem so dull next to a mustard color and a pile of gold. Most women would wear silver on a grey top. The moon is considered female energy, wearing silver on silver is about calling for that moon, gentile, female energy. The sun is considered a male planet, the golden colors which emanate from it, is hot and powerful. I have a strong character, and always felt attracted by solar planet energy, thus wearing gold for me means being supported by a strong entity which energizing me constantly and gives me the light I need to look alive and prompt for any situation.

This is one of the principals for a successful outfit. One might like a certain color but if it is not suitable to the face, it is the wrong color, simple as that.

As I said, black around my face turns off the light of my hair and my eyes, black makes my complexion washed out or sad, as I often say. Black might be an elegant color, it might be a protective color, it might be slimming and all that jazz, but black receives no energy, nor light and gives out no energy and no light either, that’s another reason I choose a cascade of gold necklaces. They will give light to my face and I can wear a black hat without feeling “turned off”.

Jill Pillot, my TV guest in this show, created the hat I am wearing, French Tweed is the fabric of my shoes, the shirt is hand-painted Italian silk, and the grey gloves are voiles.
If you want to see the show will be posted here in about a week: https://valentinadesignuniverse.com

Valentina Design Universe TV – Valentina On Stage Show “Stylish Pile”

Not knowing the best colors for our complexion is often the case with women. Buying clothes is a relaxing, fun activity. Coming home with packages and try everything on is even more amusing, then comes the usual dilemma “I have nothing to wear”. Well, ask yourself if you bought clothes because the price was right, you had some money or time to waste, or because you really bought garments that would improve your look. Knowing this, next time you shop, you should be able to leave on the racks all the items that are not for you, no matter how cute they are. A professional like me can help, just say so. Ciao,

Exceptional Colors in 2019 | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Fashion by Valentina Cirasola

Some things are not born together, perhaps are born in a different era or meant for different purposes and like magic, they look good together when I see them together.

This beaded collar with golden stones was born in the ’40s way before my time, I found it at an antique store, fell in love and brought it home with me. I have worn it ever since I spotted it, almost twenty years ago. I have worn it alone, over a white shirt, over an open generous décolletage, paired with other jewelry and lately with this ceramic face designed by a local artist. It seemed expensive twenty years ago, it was a frivolous buy, I have made so much use of it through the years that it is part almost of my everyday dressing up.

Beaded Vintage Choker

Trends to me mean nothing, it feels almost as if someone wants to pull me by the nose to make me do things their way. I use trends as guidelines and from there I make my own choices and style. In my TV show, you will see how I am using the 2019 colors dictated by the industry and how I steer away with my solutions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bJ9nF7voZE

My love for colors extends beyond the meaning of each color. It’s about the power, the vibration, the energy each one brings and how I can stay on track with harmony, health and internal peace using colors. Next year, I will start new seminars on these subjects and colors. For now, enjoy the video and visualize you in the new palettes I suggested. Your beginning next year should be fresher, renewed, unexpected for all reasons in the world, not because you need it. Ciao,

Craving Rich Purples | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Welcome to November Friday Fashion new episode.
I knew in this 2019 coming year, colors take inspiration from food. With all the talk of organic, farm to table food, slow food movement and colorful food to help balance or activate the chakras, I was waiting for some of those colors to reach our fashion and our interiors. It will be fun to see raspberry and all the berry colors combined soft pinks, saffron, salmon, chocolate and a light green just to refresh the beautiful warm colors of 2019. Now, we can focus on the memory of food and the sensory experience we have with real heartwarming foods and transfer those experiences in out clothes.
Ultra Violet continues to rule not alone but with rich gold, brandy color, camel color, and tan color.

roksolana-zasiadko-i07ss4dGzIo-unsplash

Combine all berry colors as you like. Add coffee, chocolate, caviar, gold, and some amethyst dust.
Purple increases intuition, it calms psychological disorders, balances physical and spiritual energies. For these reasons has been called the “color of wisdom”.

Enough of minimalism, these are glorious colors, let’s make our clothes in 2019 filled with timeless opulence and bring to light our femininity and power.

Ciao,

Hat Statement | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Last Friday, I showed this cloth package. Inside there is something I bought at a store which uses new and donated fabrics to make new garments or “fresh vintage” as they call it. This store is in tune with the concept of saving the environment. Instead of giving away a paper or plastic shopping bag, this store puts the purchases in a cloth and closes it like a candy. I said I was going to disclose the content on my next Friday Fashion.

Here it is, a large pie hat with a few frills hanging in the back. The beauty and the attraction of the hat is all in the back. The front has only a large elastic black band.

And this is the way I wear it. What do you think?

Some people think one must have the right face to wear hats. Nothing can be more false, there is a hat for every face, just need to find it, maybe need to find it with the help of a designer who has a clinical eye and can balance all the lines of the body, skin textures, skin colors and shape of the head with the right hat.

Hats have many functions, from elegant, casual, and very sporty. They add an interesting element to the outfit, they hide a bad hair day, and add an aura to the face, with the hat one even assumes a completely different behavior and attitude. I believe we should go back to dress for ourselves first, and bring back that charm women had in the past. Are you encouraged to wear hats? Ciao,
Valentina

Ricochet | Valentina Cirasola | Designer

Welcome to my Friday Fashion.
Ricochet is a French word meaning “Bounce”. It’s true, fashion goes into cycles and every 20-30 years comes back as new, but to make fashion out of found fabrics and remnants is a real art. This is what Jill Pillot does. A native of Belgium, Jill brought with her all her creativity, artistry and love for fabrics when she crossed the ocean at age of 21 and landed in America. Her story is so fascinating that I have invited her to my TV show next November to tell it with her words. Emigrants usually work twice as harder than locally born people to prove that nothing faces them in the making of their dreams. She wanted to become a fashion designer,  lived rocambolesque events until one-day things started to fall in place.

She owns a beautiful Bohemian fashion store, well decorated and full of her creations. One doesn’t really know where to look first, there is no focal point, brain/eye activity is very fast, now you are looking at something beautiful here and a second later you spot something else more interesting than the previous item. I was attracted by the various styles of lighting, from modern to vintage, country to funky, those light fixtures share the space beautifully, a space lined with whitewashed wood walls and wood floor. In there she teaches fashion, sewing, and modeling. This is a true treasure trove of beautifully orchestrated fashion mixed with some décor pieces and a plethora of fun events.

Her fashion creations are unique and are meant for people who appreciate art in clothing. She produces original, one-of-a-kind pieces due to the limitation of fabrics. Her approach to fashion is free, mathematical calculations and patterns are out of the window, she rather instead piecing various textures and colors together. This is the old fashion European way of constructing a garment, as my mom did as well as a designer. Jill lays fabrics on the table and sees the direction she wants the fabric to take, just by following her instinct, then sews it together. The result is unstructured, flowing pieces without sizes. In fact, the amount of fabric she has to work with determines the size of each garment. I will leave the rest of Jill’s interesting story for my TV show.

Where would you find a store so in tune with the concept of saving the environment that gives purchased merchandise wrapped in cloth looking like a candy?
In my next episode, I will disclose what I bought from Ricochet, Fresh Vintage, as they call themselves.
Nice touch Jill !!!
